Edible Landscaping Violette De Bordeaux i bought late last fall that was in dormant state , its coming around nice this spring although im sure the breba will fall like they do on my other trees which is ok as i always look forward to getting ripe main crop of figs before season ends in fall.

Judging from your other years experience, when do you expect it (VDB) to ripen?

My first figs generally start august 15 (el sals) and all figs are done around october 7. Unless we get a nice autumn as my 1 unknown always leaves lots of figs unripe in october when others are spent of theirs and nights turn cold.

Many references indicate that VDB and Negronne are the same.

Very nice tree Martin,  I was wondering,  do you have some little tiny trees coming out the bottom roots of the large one on the right side of the pot? Looks like little fig trees way at the bottom!!  Very nice.  You sure keep everything looking very well kept.  Ciao

When i recieved tree it was in bush form, i like to grow sorta like a tree form instead most of my plants.
So when i put into bigger pot i cut and cut and saved a few and just stuck 2 sticks in soil and 1 is growing and maybe another start not sure, also not sure but a tiny little itsy bitsy one right next to trunk maybe a sucker from root seems to recently come up .

Thanks. Don't tell me you are like me ... I complain that I would never win the lottery, but I don't play. They say "a dollar and a dream" - well I have the dreams, just never seem to put the dollar down on the lottery. Maybe I'll send you the value of shipping in NJ Lottery tickets! If you win, you must take me along on the fig hunt - I'd be a good fig-caddy!

Why did it fell off. It looked so healthy. Was it wind or something similar?
I am asking because I have a few brebas looking like yours and I want them to ripen because it will be the first of brebas for me if they ripen, two for me and two for my wife who let me use the cold store for keeping pots with dormant plants (unless the squirrels get to the brebas before I entertain them with the squirrel bon bon)

It was cold weather we had , i never have gotten a breba to ripen in my area yet since i have been growing fig trees.

Same problem here ... brebas fell off Marseilles, Celeste and my Unknown Bella. Got some main croppers growing though!

I do get a few brebas on the tree's in early spring not too many and i figure by me bringing them in and out of garage and the cold we usually get plus at a certain point i just leave them outside and some nights get into the mid 40s with a good breeze and all the temp changes it does them in each year, there were several days at 36 to 38 that i left the large trees out on patio as they were just starting to break bud but it did not harm them. I do this each year to try to get a earliest start as possible, this year seemed to be one of the colder springs though.
The brebas really not important to me i must say as im concerned about the main crop getting ripe before season turns cold here.
The small plants i was constantly bringing in garage early on as there just to tender but there doing fine just slow for now.
One breba which im surprised is still on tree my unknown italian, im pretty sure its a breba as i do know for sure its on last years wood as i remember this tree very well because when i was root pruning it this past winter one branch poked me good in the neck and i bleed onto te shirt, i then pruned the branches back as not to get stuck when moving it. At dinner time the family said " Dad what happened to you?"
I did post this back then, but anyhow that lone breba i posted here if anyone is curious

its grown and looks almost size of regular fig now and with the weather i think it will make it so i leaves it alone for now, that branch has leaves now and maybe tomorrow i take picture with that same breba.

Oh i forget to mention it will be interesting for me as i have 2 ucdavis sticks that rooted and are growing well but there the Breba only for me , i wont get a main crop as it needs the fig wasp for main crop. Its called Santa Cruz Dark
I might hold these 2 back in garage a little longer and not expose to cold like others and see what happens, maybe i can get figs a little earlier than usual if it works but they need to taste good and i can prune them accordinly as i have 2 so maybe i cut one back and alternate each year for a good crop, time will tell anyways. As this type is totally different for me, im not used to.

Here is Violette De Bordeaux again 35 days later from other picture in this thread, main crop figs starting.
This is first experience with VdB fig plant, im not sure because its young or what but the figs coming out are turning like a purple color yet they are "young main crop figs"  not that old, is it because tree is young or do they normally do this as they continue to grow with this type of plant? Plant grew nice since 35 days back and i cut the ends of the branches that needed it and nipped the main trunk tip recently to manage its height that i wanted.

VdB definitely show some purple coloration very early on.

My breba is more green than purple. The main crop figs are bright purple.

it was EL. largest available at the time 5g. Bought Jan28,08. It now is in my largest of containers around 25g or so.
Thanks Jon i was surprised to see them color like this my first experience with VdB cultivar they look nice as other plants i have the figs stay green until there time to start turning i see these seem to be different in that respect.

The VDB figs do color up early, here's the brebas at the end of March and one at the end of June. Main crop look about the same. This is an EL VDB, Martin.

I had to resurrect this thread from a few days ago to show off my one and only Negronne (=VdB) breba.  Just above it, there are the little main crop figlets starting to pop out.


(I've been lurking in the forum for about a year now, but this is my first post.  I'm not sure if the picture link is going to work, but I'm going to be bold and press the post button now.)

i dont recognize the name from chatroom but then i chatted with many in past.
Your picture is fantastic it is a very nice closeup capturing nice detail along with great color. Matter of fact its so nice i can see FMV in the leaves the mottling cant spell that word or bubble like in leaves and discoloration of the chlorophyll, BUT dont worry most all fig plants have it and show it one way or another and it does not hurt most types including VdB from what i have seen on forums. Mine is doing fine with it as well and yours from past and this picture look good.
When fig gets nice and ripe maybe you can take more on inside and we can compare how they look.
Did you buy your plant from a nursery ?

Mine came from Edible landscaping nursery.
