Violette de Bordeaux Fig Video Review

Nice fig tree, Joe. Happy to see you are successful.

I have a new VdB this year, a TC that a bought for 7 bucks and it was about 6" long plus this tiny root ball when it arrived here in Georgia in mid-April. Today, it is about 3 or more feet tall and bushing out well at the bottom - plus it is as healthy as it can be. Of course, no fruit from this juvenile this year, but its future looks bright. It is in a 20" planter this year, but it will go into the ground next Spring. Again, that for the video!  Joe

Great Stuff as usual, my 2 VDBs are in a pot. Have about 12 small figs, I am waiting anxiously. I have had the wrong impression, I thought they didn't like high heat. Seeing that they are doing well in your extremes, that will help me. I plan to give one to my Stepson and plant it in the ground. Thank You Joe.

Nice video
Thank you for sharing.

Nice flick, Joe.  Looks very productive.  I see you've trimmed her back quite a bit.  Hmm, where'd all the cuttings go?

Interesting point, Armando. My new VdB TC plant had difficulty in the sun and heat at first. But then, when I moved to the shade of my patio, it took off like a rocket. ¿Quien sabe?  Joe

Thanks for the video report Joe.

I have a VdB question, if you don't mind my 'hijacking' the thread.  I have a 2 yr old VdB that just pushed out it's first tiny 'figlet'.  I am new at figs, and have now 4 other plants that have just recently made their first figlets.  The previous 4 plants started with tiny green figlets, and 3 of the 4 are supposed to be dark figs eventually.  The figlet on the VdB is about 2-3 mm across and is purple.  Is that usual for VdB figlets?

Thanks guys.

Armando from my experience VdB does not like hot dry weather.  I know someone out here in Arizona who has a big mature VdB and it looks green and lush no matter what the weather is.  I wish I had his success with this variety.  For me this tree wilts in high heat and needs a lot of water to produce juicy figs.  Even with a lot of water the skin can still be dry and tough.  It is a great tasting fig, but it will probably be happiest in a more humid or moderate climate.

Nate over the winter I pruned back all of my larger fig trees.  I kept a few of the cuttings.  But most of them ended up looking something like this.  :)

Good video Joe, what is your original source for your vdb? I've noticed some vdb ' s are a little different depending on where it came from. I have one from JR here in La and it has really skinny fingered leaves like a nero 600m, then I have another that I rooted with wider more broad leaves still with the fingers, similar to yours from what I can see, I also rooted some vdb cuttings from ucd this season but the fmv is so bad it's hard to tell what they look like. They are still too small for me to compare the fruit between all of them but the figglets look the same.

Nice work Joe...send some of that heat here to the east coast...love 'them' videos.

Lol! Well, hell.  Send some of those this way, why don't ya?

Nice figs Joe, thank you for your kind sharing!

Some people need to buy a dryer...you get 'em dried directly from the tree! :-)

Your climate is crazy, 110F for a couple of weeks? Seriously - how do you survive out there?!?

Joe, I like the pics of the steaks, pretty cool. Will save some dead cuttings for the fire pit at the Fourth of July barbecue...LOL

Very helpful review, Joe.  Drooling over here!

Thanks everyone.

Ed that is normal.  VdB figs often turn purple much earlier than on other varieties.  It is not an indication that they are ready to pick.  They will swell up significantly in size as they get closer to being ripe.

Ryan I got that tree from another fig collector here in AZ.  I'm not sure about his original source but he is very reliable.  I also have a smaller VdB from UC Davis growing in a container.  They do appear slightly different but I will need more time to know for sure.  The UC Davis tree has longer, skinnier leaves.  But it is still small and needs more time before I know the mature leaf shape.

Hi Christian.  Yeah it's hot here.  What part of Germany are you from?  My mother is from Freiburg im Breisgau. Summers in Germany are not very hot from what I have seen.  It is totally different here in Arizona.  The figs like it but some varieties get stressed by the heat.

Armando that is not my photo.  I just found it on the internet to illustrate what I did with most of the fig wood I cut.  It has a nice scent.

Joe,

I live in the north of Germany near Hamburg.
Freiburg is a beautiful region, and the Breisgau is also known for good whines i believe.
So you are of german descent, that's cool.
Compared to the northern states of the U.S. our summers are not as hot.
But our winters are more mild, because of the gulf stream. Spring reaches us earlier, first frost comes later.
It could get in the 90's here but not over weeks. Plus we have kind of cool nights not often over 68F.

I should have posted a photo when I asked the question about VdB figlet color - here is a correction of my oversight.  That is one tiny purple figlet, and even the stem is purple.
