Visit with fig breeder

On the photo issue, he explained that once a photo is circulated someone can claim the variety has been "introduced" even though it hasn't been formally selected by him yet and this can affect his plant breeder's rights or ability to patent.  Apparently, it has happened before over his career so the policy on photos is very firm.  I don't really think photos would contribute much anyways.

One interesting thing I can share which isn't part of the breeding directly but which may be helpful to others in cold areas.  He lives just a little over an hour from me but gets quite a bit colder, down into the teens (maybe 17F this year).  To protect the young branches he has grafted or budded he uses the grey foam insulation sold for plumbing, probably the 1/2" pipe size, and placed it over the young branches to protect them from die-back.  He just cinches the foam tight by using green tie tape.  Since a lot of people here at F4F live in cold areas where they get limb die-back, this might be worth giving a try on their smaller branches.

One way these responses helped me was to make a bit more crystal clear about how hawaii farmers went with White Texas Everbearing and LSU Gold.  The latter seems to have most of the desired characteristics, given the interview.  Perhaps we'll be seeing more LSU Gold in stores at some point.
