Visit with Mario on Sunday

Thank you Mario for having some of us over to your house this past Sunday. Your family is very nice and friendly. You have a wonderful home and a great place to grow figs! The figs were so sweet and tasty, I wish we had longer to visit. Everyone should visit Mario. He has so much helpful information and really has a green thumb. Thank you for the Dottato fig plant and the Salce fig plant. I will post more pictures later in the week. It is great that we can get togather and talk figs and sample some of the fruits. Really a great time.
Really enjoyed meeting Bill also, thank you for the plants also.
Thank you again Mario.
More pictures soon.

Nice plants...hate that I missed it.  But I am glad everyone had a good time!!

Which fig is the tall one in the picture? Those leaves look a lot like one of my unknowns

Hi Sara, it would have been nice for you to be there. We need some more people at these get togathers. Mario"s plants were great and he is very nice. I did not expect any plants but I was very happy to get 2 from him. The day was wonderful!

71GTO, the small plant is a Dottato Fig.

Thanks for asking.

I was literally on my way, but stopped and found a parent on the floor.  Spent the day in waiting room at hospital.  SO glad I stopped!   I will get to Mario's, I want to meet him & see all his trees with their leaves intact, etc.
Hopefully we can get Caney to come up north a bit when we try to do the next one....where ever we decide to do it, when we decide to do it.

So the taller plant with the finger leaves is the salce?

Thanks for all the compliments David . I had a great day, and loved to entertain some good people. I hope next year we can make it bigger and better. Sara i still got your salce fig here in a pot and i will hold it till next year or whenever you come over. I also have a dottato wright from the old country in a pot for you. Let me explain, the salce tree comes from my hometown in Italy. I do not know the real name of this fig because it is rare even in Italy. When i was a boy we used to raise figs mostly to feed them to our pigs . We would raise the salce for our table, because once you've had salce fig the rest just don't matter. To me it is the best fig you will ever eat.

Oh Mario, you are fabulous!  Sending you another PM.

Sara, I hope your parent is ok and nothing serious!  How fortunate you were there for them!  I was in Atlanta (actually Kennesaw - but close enough) and tried to call my parents - but couldn't get hold of them or one of my sisters who live on the same property or my other sister - and I got worried.  One of my BIL finally answered the phone but was cutting in and out - all I heard was "at hospital".  By that time really worried, but turned out that one of parent's best friends was in the hospital.  There are times I really hate living almost 1000 miles from them.

Mario it was kind of you and your family to host strangers (fig forum pals although) in your house!  Hopefully next time I can get up there.  I'm really interested in trying the Salce.  And if everybody likes BBQ, I'll bring some!

Yes, it was a very nice visit with you Mario. We must do it again sometime and get an earlier start. I know we all had plenty more "fig talk" left in us.

Thank you very much for your hospitality. And I can't thank you enough for the fig tree gifts you sent us away with.

Mario, I want to try to convey the proper (phonetic) pronunciation of your Salce fig. I know some will be wondering about the pronunciation. I know it may be obvious to those who speak Italian. But not so much for most of us.

It goes something like this: 'Sal' (as in the word salt) and the "ce" is pronounced 'chay'.  So "Sal-chay" is how Mario pronounced the word Salce. He is the Italian so I think we should listen to him on this one ;) .

Here are a couple pics of Mario's Salce fig tree:

The pic on the left is Mario's tree in his greenhouse. The one on the right is the one I had the awesome priviledge of giving a ride to my house :-) - Thanks again Mario!

I don't think the pics are working

Sorry about that folks. Hopefully the pics are visible now.

Here are a few more pictures at Mario's. A nice setup.

Every time I see that picture, I like the set up even more than the last.

Well thanks to the storm up here, my backyard has been cleared of two large oaks with a huge canopy. Now with a  little snipping and pruning, I will have enough room for a hoop house/ green house if I choose.

Way to find a silver lining Dominick.
