Vista

1000 words about today.

still your favorite evidently :)

I agree it is a special fig,and I see why Jon loves it.
I love it too, because what is great is great ,no matter if it is in California or New Jersey.

It is still what you measure everything else by.

So, I guess it goes on my wish list!

Suzi

Suzi, they are available.

pardon my obsession, but how many grams do you reckon that to be?

Telegrams? Instagrams? Pajamagrams? I don't weigh figs, I eat them. ;-))

Nice to know!  We have an offer on Fallbrook property pending, so one of these days, I'll head on down and pick up a Vista!

Funny about property these days.  Prices are going up.  Inventory is low, so multiple offers are happening.  Gives you that panicked feeling.  Once we move, all my figs will go in-ground... AFTER we rip out tons of overgrown old trees and shrubs.

Hey Jon, how do you rate it compared to Black Mission NL?  On a scale from one to 10, if Vista is a 10 what is BM NL?

From what I understand, vista is genetically Identical to VBD.  For those members that have both can you confirm, leaves, ripening and flavor similarities?

Shawn, Same DNA  but out performs all the over VdBs I have in growth, fruiting, flavor.

Dennis, Black Mission NL is a different, a little juicier usually, and larger n size. I would probably give a little edge to Vista, but would be quite happy with either one.

Sorry....What is a "Black Mission NL"  ???????  What does "NL" stand for?  Not Lousy?

Frank

Thanks Jon...now, I know.

Now, three questions re: the "Black Mission NL"

1.     Is this a strain that's contaminated with FMV?

2.     If trees are clean, is it a hardy fig variety for the Northeast Coast/NYC, Z-7b?

3.     Where can this strain be purchased?

Thanks for any information.

I grow VDB and Vista. My Vista has it's first crop this year so I am looking forward to comparing.

Yes, it has FMV, but grows 10' a year and fruits heavily. It is hardy to 38F here. I may still have one or two left.

Thanks, Jon, for the information.  38 degrees....not good for NYC.  :(

Frank

Just shorted out my keyboard...

How much do you charge for the pajamagrams?

Jon,

I have a VDB already ordered for this winter. However are you offering cuttings due to the vigorous growth habit?

Chris

I usually have cuttings.

Frank, it might take colder, but I don't have any way to test it (thankfully!!).

Thanks, Jon....

The marginal "hardiness" to 38 degrees, or, a little cooler..... plus the FMV = Kiss-of-Death in NYC.  The cold will kill off what the virus weakens....then, no more "Black Mission-NL"

Frank

Frank,
Common figs do not freeze around 38 degrees. Jon mentioned that it is hardy to 38 in his environment. In other words, that this is the lowest Vista had experienced in his area. Most forum members are making statements like this:
... "it took 19 degrees last winter"..., ..."it survived a cold snap of 21 degrees past winter"... etc. The members do not want to talk of hypothetical things and talk strictly from their personal experience. Now there are some members that exaggerate the cold hardiness of their plants, and I think that overestimating may be harmful as opposed to underestimating.

Personally, I think that Vista should be close in hardiness to VDB.

Yes, Boris...

I didn't think that this variety would be severely damaged below 38 degrees, and, in fact, with Winter protection, it might do very well in NYC...but then again, it may not, because of the the debilitating effects of FMV.  If it was just a hardiness issue, I'd take my chances, and try it.  Because of limited storage space, I grow a very small number of fig trees.  In any event, I don't have the room for trees that are diseased, no matter what the variety.  I have to draw the line somewhere.  Disease, and hardiness issues, along with early ripening, resistance to splitting, souring, etc. can make, or break consideration of a variety that I will try.  In this case, two strikes, and this variety is out.

I appreciate you comments.

Frank
