Nice and plump this year. The potted plant has short necks while the in ground plant has long necks.

Those are good looking figs :)

I got some Vista cuttings from Jon last winter and just ate my first fruit from them yesterday.  Good stuff, wish I had a whole hedge of them.

That's fascinating that the neck size is changed by being in ground vs in pot.  Was one a cutting from the other?  I seem to remember people confirming a fig wasn't xxxxx by saying the neck was not big enough.

Its been my observation that longer necks occur when there is a period of rapid growth with longer internode spacing. I've obsered it in VDB, Celeste, O'Rourke, Champagne Southern Brown Turkey and a few other cultivars.

Some say VM and VDB are the same fig. I’ve been growing both for about 10 years. They are similar, both are excellent but I think they are different. In my yard VM is a stronger grower and more productive. DNA testing showed VM is the same as VDB but how deep do they look? My sister and I share the same DNA but of course are completely different. If I could only grow one it would be VM. This year VDB fruit are smaller than usual and somewhat tough on the outside. VM put out a nice crop of  breba this year which was also unusual.

 

There was a thread about VM a month or so ago. I don’t remember who it was but they had a large tree with no figs. In my experience VM pushes out lots of figs year 1.   


In ground VM, all the necks on that plant are at least that long and some are longer.

I have a lot of varieties with long necks this year. Sals (EL), MBVS, Hardy Chicago and a bunch of unknown locals.

The potted VM with the short necks is about 4 years old and came from the in ground VM.
