Wait or Pluck? Let the critters have it?

This is my unknown which you have ID as Osborne.  I think you are right.  Look how sweet she is.  Heavy and soft in my hand, but she hangs and she isn't ready to let go.

It's a dilemma.  If I wait too long, evil critters with amazing noses will get her..  Ready.Pin.jpg

Looks good enough to me, especially if there is competition!

Oh there is always competition, but hanging in this forum for years I know it should fall off in my hand to be perfectly ripe, but it looks and feels so soft and ripe.  It's a conundrum!

Now it looks like Col de dame fig. Lol. If its really dark red ...... maybe lol. Can you show a couple leaf pics.

I went back to your original post. Not col de dame. But pic that fig already and show us whats inside. With that long neck we need to rethink Osborn Prolific in my opinion

I'll show you what's inside when she falls into my hand.  She isn't ready to pick yet.  I pray the critters don't get her before I do.

Stay strong, Suzi!  You can put some 1/2 inch hardware cloth around it to keep it from the critters.

Should all figs be left on the branch until they almost fall off? I thought I heard that some varieties reach their peak before getting that ripe.

It depends on variety, your preferred taste and environment. In the northeast, figs may sour due to humidity if left too long. If you are in a dry climate, you can let them dry on the tree. I have found I like my figs with a bit of firmness, but others like them as ripe as possible.

Suzi I would put a bag or something over it!

An idea that just came to me was to wrap it in aluminum foil. That would contain the fragrance and discourage any critter

I steal my wifes panty hose and cut them up into little net bags. And they are free. #!!!

So this morning I go out there and check it again.  It's not as plump or as heavy.  I'm now worried.  Finally I grab a knife and sever it off the branch.  It had 3 ants on it.  I blew them off, brought it in and this is what I got:

Cut it open:

Very juicy and sweet.  At this point, it's just a light refreshing fig.  Had I left it longer, it might have been richer, but surely not as juicy.  It's a conundrum, but I have many more figs on which to test.  Some are starting to get the droop.  Is it Osborn?  I do not know.  I found it growing on county property.  Could have been a seedling that worked out to be good.  I do remember that the original tree had many shriveled figs on it, and I couldn't tell what color they were, but they did look light.

Hi,
The leaf is correct for osborn unprolific as a post here states...
Yes, you got it, mine has no brebas on it this year ... Hopefully, some figlets will pop out later this year like in July ...

Does look different from my Osborne prolific. Generally Osborne P. fig size is large. I have posted
pictures of my Osborne Prolific before. I have seen pictures of Osborne P. in green color. For me - as
long as my wife likes it, it is a keeper.
