Walmart brand dried mission figs - pretty good!

Found these by accident.  I think they were $1.97.  Actually better tasting than any other brand I've tried.

Nice! Will be looking for them. I have tried other brands mission dried figs and though they were not so great. Black mission seems to be the only dried fig I see in stores. Are they the most common fig commercially grown?

Frank:

Have you tried the Turkish dried figs? At their best they are the best dried fruit I've tried.

I haven't had the black missions in a while.

Steve, are you referring to the Turkish Smyrna figs like can be purchased online at Nuts.com?  I think I have read your reports on those before, though.  I guess I will have to break down and get some despite the shipping costs.    Until I can grow enough to dry in quantity :)

The only Turkish dried figs I have had were the dried string figs, very dry, hard and not very good.

Rushing out to Walmart tonight after work!

Ed, the ones I like are: https://nuts.com/driedfruit/figs/turkish.html

The only issue is some in some batches can have a fermented taste. They are still edible just not the great taste. My first 30 lbs were all superb. The second 30 lbs, part were fermented. You might try a lb. They are light yrs better than anything I can make even from my very best RdB, St Rita, or Strawberry Verte.

Yes, I believe Mission will be the most common variety in stores.  I had tried Sun Maid brand, and it had too much of a chemical taste.  The walmart figs only had 1 or 2 stems out of the whole bag.  Maybe I got a good batch!

Steve,

A couple years ago I saw Turkish dried figs in the produce area.  They were ok, but some were rock hard and a strong chemical taste to them.

Meg,

Try also the Trader Joe's dry figs and the ones from Whole Foods ( these are not prepackaged and you can sample one before buying).
Also, try any ethnic stores like Armenian, Lebanese, etc, they all will have the dried Turkish and/ or Greek figs, they are very good!

Whole foods are the best ive tasted. I will get the grate value figs grate value to me is a very good brand. Sometimes not the cheapest brand nut always good

I have to agree on the Wally Great Value Mission figs being pretty good.

I also am a regular for the turkish ones from Nuts.com. My last purchase was a 5 lb bag. I don't care for their california and their mission figs though. They also have dried apricots I like really well.

Of course there are lots of different Turkish dried figs. The good ones are not rock hard. Try the ones from nuts.com. They are soft, chewy, extremely sweet, and very flavorful. If I didn't link above, can't remember, here's the link again: https://nuts.com/driedfruit/figs/turkish.html?utm_source=shareasale&utm_medium=affiliate&utm_content=787966&utm_campaign=389818

I usually find the figs mentioned in this thread. Usually next to the grapes in the cooler. They're pretty good.

I believe those were the ones that were inconsistent, meaning some were hard, and some were good.  Definitely worth trying out if you're in withdrawals.  ;)

Nuts.Com figs are good. With baking day fast approaching, no time to order. I am heading to Walmart this morning! Cuccidati/buccalato will soon be in the oven!
