Thank you, all, again! The seeds are going out in the First Class white envelopes today. Please let me know if they don’t get to you by the end of the week or so. They have been kept in a moist environment and are best to start right away.I would appreciate if you post any updates in this thread! Happy figging!

Truman,
I mentioned this in some other threads, I have no way to verify since all my figs are pollinated, including the Commons too.

How long does it take to grow a fruit bearing plant from a seed? as opposed to a twig?

It took me 18 months in this case:
http://figs4funforum.websitetoolbox.com/post/from-a-seed-to-a-fig-in-18-months-ripe-photos-added-7026492?&trail=50
It is about from 6 months and up for a healthy twig.

I'm just trying to educate myself a little... As I understand it, Smyrna and San Pedro fig trees require pollination. Caprifig trees are used to pollinate these trees, but need a special wasp? If you don't have this special wasp, would it make sense growing seeds from any of these trees? Are common figs self-pollinating? Are open eye type figs usually associated with a need for a pollinating wasp?

I would start over here:http://waynesword.palomar.edu/arbimg10.htm There are a number of other resources online too. You could also use a search function on this forum since many wasp topics have been covered already. Yes, you need a special wasp, Blastophaga psenes. The common figs do not require pollination but may benefit from it. An open eye in the figs is not associated with the “need” to pollinate, although the figs may split as a result of over pollination.

Have a few more from Black Mission, Unk Pastilliere, VdB, Grasa Seattle Purple, and Golden Celeste.
The figs were damaged by rodents and birds but have many seeds

Tyler,
Thanks for letting me know! I am really curious how many will still stand next spring, after your Canadian winter.
If the summer is hot enough, you may even get a fig or 2.
Any seedlings resemble the mother plant?
Please keep us updated!

They should be good since I can easily bend them to the ground and cover them. Most of them have similar leaves.. There is one that has long finger leaves and I wondered if a stray seed from another variety got mixed in otherwise it definitely is different looking lol. We're having hot weather here lately... 30+ C Tyler

Nice!
I was really careful not to mix the seeds from different varieties.
There is always a chance of a stray seed but I think it is very low.
And we do not know how the father looks, that might make a difference :)

I was very busy last week and didn't have time to pickup the ripe figs.
The birds have done their nasty thing and now I have many seeds from Unk Pastilliere, Strawberry Verte, Grantham's Royal, and Unk. Large Black fig.
Please PM me if you want any.
The germination rate is quite high.

green fig has sent me two batches of fig seeds. The first batch was incredible. I think that the entire shipment germinated and are now in cups or gallon containers, many also reside in friends houses. They are gorgeous. The second batch has nearly all germinated and are now in the seed leaf stage and getting stronger many are getting real leaves. Igor sends hem to you in a state that ,if you can sprout any seed these seeds will sprout and flourish. Thank you very much Igor.

I think you need to give a bit more time to see what kind of figs come out.
I know on their second year some seedlings will produce but rarely on the first year.
That is assuming your season is long.

Which of these seeds can survive a zone 6 winter? Might get some to replant a creek area. And last times seeds grew but unfortunately They died after a bunch of insects attacked them.

Hi, From seed in Zone7, the fig treelings don't have time to form hardened wood within the first growing season... So except for some sheltered areas ... The winter will toast them like other succulents. But if you seed them in a pot and keep them inside during the winter, then they stand a chance. I have two natural seedlings here ( they came alone this Spring ), and I'm still thinking if I should protect them or not ? Ho well, one 80liters trashcan over them is not that hard to do ... Will it be enough ? That is the experience for this coming winter. Would they do it without any protection, could be another experience. I have a potted seedling started in December 2013, and I have kept it inside during both winters. I'm still thinking on what to do with it this coming winter of 2015 ... Let it go dormant or keep it growing . So, even in Zone6, you could raise them... as a green tree ... as a fruiting tree, the answer is still to come for me. But that's the experience and the challenge !
