No success ? Wow!
The only way I found to kill the seeds was to deep freeze them.
Lol, that's what you did too?

Hi, I meant to tell ya"ll (Texan) earlier that the Maderia black seeds I got Started sprouting this morning! WooHoo can't wait, although I do have to admit they are so tiny I worry about rather or not they will make it. I did ask about the parentage and the female is Maderia black, male that fertilized could be a capfig or ...  It will be interesting to see what the adult tree turns out to be and how the fruit will taste.
Wish me luck, they're very delicate right now.

Congrats!
The male was definitely a caprifig though :)

Yes, the seeds are delicate but ... If you start a 1/2 diameter cutting and a seed in February and they grow freely, by the end of the season (December here) the cutting tree will grow in the seedling's shadow. Those tiny things are some monster growers!

That BM sounds fancy but a chance that a BM fig will grow out of them is still quite small.
Might be something similar or better or worse but not exactly the same.
The statistics of an outcome is out there, please search on the forum/internet

I just got some seeds In the mail yesterday, Thanks Greenfig. I counted about 250 seeds.

I thought I would share how I got each one planted into pots.  Since its very hard to pick up seeds this small with your fingers, what I do is I take a plastic fork and dip it in water, this puts little drops of water on the fork, now you can touch the drops of water to a seed, it will stick to the drop, you can pick up each seed 1 at a time and plant them.  Started planting them at 5pm last night got done planting at 9pm, so 4 hours to get them all in pots...

Today I built a 20x80 greenhouse to put them all in for the winter.  I am going to have all 250 in 5 gallon pots, so that is how much space I needed to give each one a 1ft space to walk in-between them.  Check out his little root, he is ready, or hopefully she. :)  Thanks again this is super fun!

Thought i would update on how that seedling is doing. He has some leaves now 2 baby leaves and 2 main leaves.

Once they are all 6-10 inches will be up-potting them into 5 gals. My goal is to grow them up to fruiting size, 6-8ft tall by this time next year.

I'm kind of borrowing space to store 5,000+ nursery pots. I'm sure they will be happy when I use them all up so they can have their potting shed space back. Hopefully I have enough pots for all the seedlings that sprout...

Will I get 5,000 non persistent capri figs! Tune in this time next year to find out out. :)

Thank you for an update!
Your scale is impressive, I wish you all the luck and hope to see some of them producing beautiful figs next year.
Do you keep track of the varieties? The seedlings will probably look and grow differently for different seeds.

I got them all tagged. I wrote the tags in the dark, so you might not be able to read them, but I can decipher the chicken scratch. :)

I will make another thread for major updates, like when I get my 1st baby fig to form.

Thanks Igor

Thanks for sharing! Very well organized and neat!
I always suggested to plant one seed per pot and that's what did, great, because even 2 seeds is too many when they get larger.

I will be watching your thread with any major updates.
The seedlings are super fun to grow.

Igor, I'm not in FL at the moment, but I've been told your RdB and GRoyal seeds have germinated and are doing well. They get some water daily via timer. Next time you see your wasp friends, please let them know their hard work is appreciated. Anticipating what the seedlings might turn into is fun.

Does anyone know if UC Davis orchard can be visited? I'll be nearby in Feb

The seedlings are coming right along. I got about 75% germination with 86 plants. Notice the different leaf patterns. It would be great if there was a way to tell the commons by leaf pattern. :)

I am looking for cheap 1 gal fabric pots to up pot these to.

I did my first ranking of the seedlings.  As expected, most of the seedlings, over 90%, have a bad case of rust.  None were completely clean, but I was glad to see some showing noticeably above average resistance.  I won't know about their fruiting traits for a year or more, but a preliminary ranking based on things like rust, branching (I prefer naturally well branched, instead of one stem rocketship), and vigor (above ave., but not monstrous preferred by me) was interesting to do.  I didn't cull any of them, just ranked them for future reference.

None of the seedlings lost their leaves over the winter(low 40F), which surprised me a bit, but I was happy about it as I eventually want figs to be hardy enough to be evergreen in most of Florida(20F ish).  That may not be possible, but I'll give it a try.

Hopefully, some of the more disease resistant seedlings will turn out to have large, delish, persistent, rain resistant, closed eye fruit as well, time will tell.

Note1: staring at fig seedlings doesn't seem to make them fruit any faster.
Note2: Gillette capri seems to have some rust resistance, which should be helpful.

Charles,

Thanks for a feedback!
Where would the rust come from? Is it common in FL?
It doesn't exist in California since it is too dry here.
I wish you a good luck with the seedlings! I hope you find a special one!

Igor,

High humidity, dew on leaves every night, and lots of rain makes a paradise for many microbes.  Where does it come from? The fungal spores are just in the air I suppose.  It's a problem that can be overcome though with some time.  Thanks again for the seeds, I suspect we will get something great from them or their children.
