wanted Grise de St. Jean

Does anyone know where I can get one of these? Buy, trade, beg . . .

Probably in Virginia it could make decent fruits but here in NJ ,it did not.
Big problem with open eye,+ not enough heat to get them ripe properly.
I would caution not to get your hopes too high ,that it will produce  high quality fruits in Virginia.
If you do not have them Think along the lines,of Malta Black,Gino, and Marseilles vs Black ,for a problem free cultivar, with dark fruits.

Is Grise de St. Jean different from UC Davis'  St. Jean?

Good question Frank. I have been wondering about it.

Herman,

I'm not in the real hot part of Va - I'm in Z 7a. I did root a Marseilles VS from encanto this spring. We'll see how that goes, but I'd still like to try the GdSJ. I really do appreciate the input though. I'm trying to rebuild my collection this year so I've been rooting a lot of trade bait, and I also sell a few on craigslist.
Thanks.
Frank,
I have no idea.

I think they are the same fig.  Excellent taste at UCD.  Here is St Jean from UC Davis.
Enjoy!

Hello Zaitun,

I'm sorry but I promised the USDA I'd stop buying stuff from overseas and they check. Once you've had the USDA at your house with the promise to return it does seem to make you more careful. But thanks. I wish I could. I also wish I had time to visit your part of the world again.

No Problem MG  , just try to help.
Thanks for your advice , I dont know its forbidden. for hobbiest

Happy growing

Best regards
Zaitun

Zaitun,

There's a way to do it but paper work of some kind is needed. I could look into this if you want. I didn't realize this either until I brought in some kaffir lime seeds from Thailand and the USDA got upset. I asked them about buying some fig cuttings that were in Turkey and it was possible but way too much hassle for that variety.

Really, I thought seeds were fine.   When bringing back seeds, I looked up the rule and read that seeds without any pulp, dirt, or anything beside the seeds were fine.   Maybe I was wrong.   As for cuttings, I didn't actually read the rule, but I thought that generally if there is no dirt, then fine.   If you had the USDA at your house, you really know what the rules are.   How did they know about your house and what did they confiscate there?

Believe it or not they trace down even bare seeds bought on ebay! I had had zero success with the seeds and they no longer existed so they didn't take anything. But I called and asked them before buying some turkish cuttings for sale on ebay and they said I could but there was paperwork needed from both countries and they'd really rather I didn't. They came here from almost two hours away so I doubt they'd return again without drawing some kind of blood. I've gone through customs with plant material and with seeds before but I guess they're cracking down - especially on citrus.
