watering schedule

Okay I have 15 fig trees in 10 gal pots and about 20 1 gal pots of cuttings that are starting to grow.  My question is how often do you guys water your trees. My trees are still young 2 years old and under.. They are potted in light media and water drains out the bottom when i water them.  I want to set up a automatic watering system with drip emitters but want the schedule to be close as I am not around alot in the heat of summer.

Watering depends on several factors.

1) Temperature. Warmer temps mean more transpiration (water loss through leaves) and more evap from soil and likely higher soil temps.

2) Humidity. Lower humidity means more transpiration and more evap from soil..

3) Soil type or potting soil type, drainage. Faster drainage means less water retention.

4) Pot size. Larger pots generally lose water less fast.

5) Plant size, esp. relative to pot size. As plant becomes larger compared to the pot size, it needs to support more plant with the same amount of water storage capacity,

6) Amount of sun/shade plant experiences. Shade is the opposite of sunh, reduces water loss, soil temps, etc.

As an idea, at 75F my one gallon pots get water every two days. By 80F, every day. In ground trees go from twice a week at 80F to 3 times a weeks at 90F,

Newly rooted things need a little water more often. As they grow, thye can be watered less frequently with more water.

i mulch my plants heavily with pine bark and water 3 times a week in the summer by drip.  of course, mine are in the ground.  despite the watering, it's amazing how things jump after a good rain.

i'd pack my plants close together and mulch the top of the pots if i were you, as well as using drip.
