Watering too many mini-sips

Wat5.jpg

If you have too many mini-sips, watering can be made easier.

  1. Construct your mini-sip with the correct size straw.

  2. Purchase economical pump-up sprayer with nozzle that just happens to fit over that straw perfectly. (Lowes)

  3. Fill sprayer with tempered water and pump up.

  4. Dial the nozzle to put out a full stream.

  5. Mate the nozzle to the end of the straw. ( Just like you would air up a tire.)

  6. Press trigger and hold until water from the overflow straw indicates full.

This method is fast and doesn't leak when done properly. As an aside, I refill sips the next day after the initial filling, because of the rapid uptake of water into the soil on the initial filling. After that, you can usually go quite a few days before filling again, depending on leaf growth, temp., etc.

I can fill 100 mini-sips in 45 minutes. Takes about 6 gal of water. You spend almost as much time filling the tank as you do watering.

I currently have 112 in mini-sips. Managed 95% rooting and looks like at least 90% are going to make it. The small loss I am seeing seems to be mostly thin tip cuttings. Min-sip potting mix is Pro-mix HP with some added lime.

Congrats! Are you going to do the sun-adjustment in the sips or after uppotting?

4bgood,
Thanks for posting picture and commentary.
What are your planter and reservoir size (SIP size)? and
Is that a current Picture? I'm surprised that you have to refill as often, because the picture does not show a lot of leaf growth. Thanks. Good Luck.

Greenfig:

I will up-pot and move into the greenhouse the same day. I have a couple of large benches that have a framework over them over which I will drape a couple of layers of Remay to filter the light at first and gradually remove it for longer periods each day, Should be on their own in 7-10 days after potting up.

Notice that my mini-sips are in boxes, but with no lids. Have not found the humidity chamber thing necessary . The picture is a couple of weeks old. Most of what you see is leafing out rather nicely now.

That picture is a couple of weeks old. I have not had to add any water after filling and refilling on day one and two. Lot more leaf growth at the moment, will probably refill this week though.

I am using 24 oz (Wal-Mart,Hefty) “Tall Boy” plastic cups. The water chamber is a 3 oz plastic cup (Wal-Mart) which fits in bottom exactly without modification. I use the usual pencil soldering iron for holes and slits.
