Weed Killer

Which weed killer will not hurt any fig trees?

newspaper and card board...layers

It is illegal in Toronto to use pesticides on our lawns so it has become dandelion heaven . You just can't avoid them even if you pick them by hand from your lawn , the seeds will float over from someone else's .

I covered my flower beds and around my trees 3 inches deep of partially composted pine bark mulch 1 " nugget size which I buy by the yard .
This stays dry on top but keeps the soil underneath nice and moist . If a seed lands on the mulch it is too dry to germinate and even if one does it's roots don't have much to cling to and come out very easily .
The mulch deteriorates over time adding nutrients to your soil . And it's great when it rains you can walk on it without worrying about muddy boots . This has reduced my weeding by atleast 90% . It not only kills existing weeds it also stops new ones from developing . And no worry of hurting the tree or anything else .
I use the same mulch in my potting mix for the fig trees .

Vicks - Any broadleaf herbicide will kill your figs.  Sorry :( but I cannot think of anything chemical that would kill weeds and leave your figs alive.

John - Last year, I used dandelions in salads all the time.  Not half bad with some mixed greens, and really nutritious.  (Just make SURE there were no herbicides)  This year, I am going to try my hand at dandelion wine - used to be common, but largely ignored for the past 50 years.  Hopefully its good!

Dave ,

I see your glass is always half full .
My roots are from Greece and dandelions boiled or in salads are a common dish . But never tried dandelion wine .
Let us know how it turns out .

Dandelion blooms and leaves are edible....the long tap roots are beneficial to plants growing near them.
I started looking at "weeds" different a couple of years ago when I started reading about all their benefits.....and the bees seem to like to blooms.
I've been planting clover, herb and other seeds all around my fruiting trees.

My neighbor(now deceased) use to make "dandelion wine" every year...he use to invite me over for a glass after he uncorked it(ugh)...he lived to be 101, so maybe there's something to it.

Weeding is good exercise. :)  Then as others have said, cover the ground with some sort of mulch. I have a lot of places to use it, so I get the ground stuff delivered by the city - only have to pay delivery charge, and there are no viable weed seeds in it. Much healthier for everyone, both trees and people.
