Weird Figs

Very nice video.  I was surprised to see signs in English  (e.g. the grill sign at 0:17).  How common is English usage in Mostar?

Glad to have you on the forum Eden.  I'm looking forward to seeing what interesting figs these are... and sounds like some nice cold hardy ones from your part of Bosnia.

Mike   central NY state, zone 5

English is widely used throughout Bosnia especially in tourist destinations like Mostar. Many Bosnians speak more than one language mostly English and German. I speak 5 languages  my self. In Catholic pilgrimages in  Medjugorje Mass is held every day in 7 different languages. 25 million pilgrims visit Medjugorjr annually.

I am glad to speak fig language now to.

Ty Mike glad to be here.

If you want to be happy 1 day - get drunk,
If you want to be happy 1 week - sell your property,
If you want to be happy a month - get  married,
If you want happiness all your  life - grow figs!

Wow - 5 languages!!  I am so envious.  My family came to US in the early 1900's.  They wanted to be "Americans" so they only spoke Italian when they didn't want the children to understand.  My Mom speaks no Sicilian at all (her father came here as a little boy, about 6 years old, and her mother was the first in her family born here). My Dad was the second born in his family (8 years younger then the oldest), so he grew up speaking Italian, but as he got older and more children were born and lived there was less spoken amongst them so by the time #7 came along she speaks very little.

I wanted my Father to teach me, but if it is not part of the home life on a regular basis it's almost impossible.

I know enough Spanish to get myself into trouble lol :)

LOL Spanish can get you in trouble JoAnn. It is understandable for me to speak more languages. In Europe as soon as you cross border you need to know another language. I am first generation here i come to USA when i was 26 years old but my kids have problem understanding Bosnian when i scream at them Lol.

Thank you for sharing pictures of your beautiful country.  It replaces the horrible images of the war torn country that we saw on the news.

i have been fortunate to try figs up and down the Adriatic and part of the Ionian, from Croatia, Bosnia (Medjugorje is beautiful and a once in a lifetime place to visit), Montenegro, Albania and northern Greece. I found english speaking people in most of those countries. Though I must the attitudes towards Americans kinda sucked in Greece and even in the country of my birth, Montenegro.

I actually have a small tree from Southern Montenegro that is almost 2 years old. It is from Shen Gjergj (St. George) a small town along the river Buna near Ulqin and across teh river from Albania. It is in a bucket with several small figs (dark variety I believe). Once established I should be able to share some cuttings.

BTW - I saw a lot of wild fig trees along the Adriatic coast. Its like a fig lovers paradise over there.

Figfinatic I am glad that that period of Bosnian history is over. Now I can enjoy Bosnian figs in peace when i go there.

Mautzi  I
agree with you about fig lover paradise  and I think that all those who love Figs and Wine should at least once in there  life  time visit the Balkan side of Adriatic coast.

Here is some pictures from my garden in Atlanta.

Eden, your grape arbor (pergola?) is exactly what I am trying to achieve over my own patio.  I finished the pergola in May and now have a Canadice Red Seedless grape climbing up one of the legs.  I had thought about muscadines but in the end went with a conventional grape.  It looks like your varieties are doing great in Atlanta.

Rewton Yes they are doing great i have 3 differente varieties: Niagara, Concord and Flame. This is a 3th season after planting and we pick about 20 lb last year and 150 lb of grapes this year.
