OK, cool it with that coment because you're getting personal now and I won't stand for it.

Do you know me at all....no you don't so I am not "known" to you and neither to the authorities because my actions weren't, and are not, a criminal offense.

Next time you are late for your doctor's or any other appointment and speed up the high way, just think about your mean reply and count yourself a criminal as well.

And no, I do not want to escalate this, just needed to stop your mean spirited reaction to a simple comment I made without calling anybody anything, much less a criminal

Sorry to disappoint you, but I won't roll over and pay dead. You've admitted on a public forum that you attempted to evade US customs regulations by lying. That is a criminal offense.

I guess this will definitely show my true fig newbie colors but just to make sure by mafia, I mean no real mafia in the sense of violence and even murder (unless I am totally clueless??)

Just like OPEC, it's more like a cartel keeping a the tight ass control or exclusivity about the figs people are dying to possess. Perhaps, just perhaps, f....ing anybody else who try to do it on his/her own?

I, however, accept the fact that if somebody goes through the trouble of getting himself an importing plant licence, he should rip the benefits but the market does not seem to work this way or does it?

Inside joke for those that care to remember it.  Wasn't trying to derail your thread.  :)

Look,  I never respond or post to any threads like this.  Doing it now because you do seem somewhat genuine and possibly misinformed.

FWIW, I read your eBay story and feel it was written as a CYA for you.  Your feedback shows me that you've been around the 'eBay block' and know what you're doing.  Maybe you felt that you could profit from selling a few cuttings that come from a major fig haven and wanted to try and add some validity to a story of how the cuttings came into your possession.  But, just in case any heat should come down you wanted to have an 'out' so you posted the story on your listing.  This is my feeling because your listing is riddled with guarantees, claims for responsibility, mention of F4F and name dropping.

At the end of the day, who cares?  You tried to sell, it didn't work out and that's that.  Stick around, learn a little more and try again.  Look, this is an expensive hobby that needs independent sellers.  Lets face it; collecting doesn't exist without trading and selling.

As far as the USDA showing up at your door, don't sweat it.  They're doing their job.  What else would you expect when your listing screams I JUST BROUGHT THESE CUTTINGS HERE ILLEGALLY FROM SPAIN AND I DARE YOU TO COME AND GET THEM!  The USDA regularly monitors eBay and eBay regularly supplies lists of buyers to them.  This is not conspiracy, it's fact.  C'mon, do you really think someone has it in for you because you're selling a few cuttings on the internet and they dropped a dime?  Please stop it!

Jay, forget all this nonsense, grow your figs and participate in the forum.  It really is a great place.  If you want to sell, try again later on, without the storytelling and you'll do just fine.

Welcome to the forum!

Finally, someone says something real. Thank you NYCfig.

Great post, Danny.  I agree, and I hope Jay decides to stick around.  Let's clear the slate and start over.

Welcome!

Welcome to the forum. You are still lucky to have them lol. Grow them. sell them. eat them

Danny, Thank you!  Well said.

Jay, welcome. Now, how about a real introduction.

This is a great group to learn from.

I have been a member since 2013, about the same time as you, and I have learned a lot from the members. Most of our members are not high stakes buyers, so I doubt anyone would have turned you in from this forum. USDA APHIS keeps a close watch on ebay for international sales. If you purchased internationally through ebay then the chance that you will be visited immediately is rare, I know from experience(should have joined the forum sooner), but your listings pretty much told APHIS that you got away with something and they screwed up. I am confident that they did not want your cuttings dispersed, their job would be much more complicated and costly trying round them all up, maybe all over the country. Better to collect from one source than a dozen. Just a thought. Also, there is more than one forum, your ebay listing is a topic of a thread on another forum... http://www.ourfigs.com/forum/figs-home/70617-new-figs-from-spain , check it out. Good luck with your other sales on ebay and keep on posting.

Thanks a lot!

You can count me as your friend and I would love to share my 20 year old plants, including some figs! that are LEGAL! This according to the same guy who came to my door from the USDA

Won't in a million years be sharing with those other guys so interested in plugging the legalities or illegalities in their responses instead of showing me something new and helpful.
Do not worry about these stiff necked responses my man."He without sin cast the first stone".It was fig cuttings not a pound of cocaine. These people need the government to control them because they are not capable of inspecting their own plants for insects and disease.

Great post Danny!

Hey thanks a lot!

I take any criticism like yours any time of the day. It is actually the kind of criticism I was looking for when I decided to come clean and face my mistakes (which were quite a few after I had a time to reflect!)

What I rebel against and have been trying to inject into some replies, is that anybody, especially, after what you mention yourself so it's not just me, can take the other side of the story and sound like the little pet watch dog for the government. Like I don't know already what I did wrong and need a dick to remind me.

I even said, along my replies, that I am not mad, want to go against the USDA or the person who showed up at my door to do his job. I understand it is job that needs to be done and will never question their authority to do it.

What I am mad about is that any so called fig enthusiast can betray another fig enthusiast with the worst kind of action. A snitch is a snitch anywhere and I hate to think he can be laughing it out watching all these postings and maybe even posted anything himself.

I know you still think this is not the case but, as I described how things happened in my original post, things just don't add up as to be caught so swiftly. I was not even the first or one of the first listings that showed when doing a search for figs or fig cuttings.

I can even go further and say that I already know where the complaint came from. I live 1400 miles up North from there so this is not just incoherent conjecture on my part.

I got a glimpse of the issued stamp on the form that the USDA guy presented to me before he took it back right away (I guess he did not want to say or show me he/they acted on a tip from somebody in that area of the country)

Anyway, lets exchange info and keep in touch for the future....good things will come (or should I say, good "figs" will come :-)

I think enough has been said on this issue.

I am surprised that no one has yet said:
.... "How about the figs"  to conclude this discussion.

I meant to say

" enough has been talked about this issue. Let us talk about figs".

How about those figs.

That is why we are  here.
For me that is to learn, grow and share.

I am looking forward to tasting many new varieties this year.  I sampled a few from several of my plants last year, and two stood out among them, my Strawberry Verte and my VDB which was amazing.  The flavor lingered long after eating them.

Thanks to our generous members I added several new varieties, which rooted nicely and are potted up just waiting to go outdoors when the weather is better.

Moving on.....

Now we are talking love, love of rooting growing and eating figs.

Thanks and best wishes for the new season that is to start soon.

Here we had record low for this part of the February -23C followed by record snow fall for one day accumulation this week of 60 cm i.e 24 inches for 24 hour period, a new record. So, my figs may have more hibernation time.

While all this discussion been going on i have been making some good trades. Picked Vashon Violet. !!

Hi, Jay: welcome to the forum! I really didnt want to post but i was compelled because....yup, I got a visit from the USDA yesterday! I was shocked! I only bought figs twice back in September when I was clueless. Anyway, a very nice lady left her card, a door hanger snd a flyer with details about imports. I called her back today because that is me. I just had to do the right thing. Let me just say that I was vety surprised even at the fact that they left a message on MY HUSBANDS cell phone! How the heck did they connect him to me if I did the buying? Anyway, they are good at their job and thats all it is. Be glad thats all it was :-). I think you'll like this forum.

Yes, a great year for figs!! (I didnt see the other posts...lol)
Ottowan25, DeMoinesWa and others, glad to talk about figs.

Meg what did she say?

She said "do you still have the cuttings?" And then she followed it with "youre not in trouble but please read the information I left you on importing plants..." She was very nice!

Meg not to incriminate you, but... How can I ask this... Were her visit/phone calls justified? Or was it an unwarranted visit?

Mike, basically Ebay records show I bought cuttings that came from Israel but I didnt know better then. So I was honest with her & let her know this.
