West Nile Virus

There always seem to be standing water around my gardening area.  Right now we in Texas are having a problem with the West Nile Virus.  I have made a special effort to empty all containers to prevent standing water.  I don't really like to use bug spray or repellents so I stuff a dryer sheet in my shirt pocket and one in my sock.  It works!  Avon skin so soft also works but I don't like the smell or feel.

Danny...

Dryer sheets?   Never heard this....the smell of the dryer sheets, repels mosquitoes?  The smell repels me, but, if it works, great.  I get killed by mosquitoes within the first few seconds when I step out of my house.

Thanks for the tip.  Now, I'll be soft and fluffy too.

Frank

Frank,
I'm having trouble with the picture.......fluffy! LOL

Danny,

I don't know how a citronella plant will do in your climate but I buy a couple plants for my patio every year.

AKA: The Mosquito plant.

I think it is in the geranium plant family.

They also get the shock treatment at night.

Citronella is a great idea, I need to plant a few a little farther out from the patio, to tell the truth, I have them on the patio, but didn't think about the "Patch"

Frank - Soft and fluffy - nice!

Bug zappers don't work on mosquitos, they are not attracted to light,
but to carbon dioxide and body warmth.

There's a product called "dunks",  little donuts treated with a bacteria that kills mosquito larva in water. I put them in my fountain, and they work.

There are other plants that repell mosquitos also. This link names five, but I have heard of others not on the list. Basil and Lemon Grass, for instance. I grow those on the deck anyway for cooking.
