What is it??

Nice! Great picture!

what variety?

definitely looks like barbatane or soilles to me.

hm... too fuzzy to be a Pastiliere...?
This was the first fruit to be ripe... the rest are darker outside.

It is funny how perceptions can be different. My son is a dental assistant. He just walked in and saw the OP pic and said, "what is that dad? Is it a pic of some surgical procedure?"

(of course he would say that, he hates figs :-(

Thank you all for your guesses!
This is my Unk. Union Berry fig featured over here. If you look through the thread, the suggestions as to what it was were different that time :)
So, I am not sure on the variety but it tastes like nothing else for sure!

Igor,

This is a nice black and exquisite fig, its shape and skin  hue, remember the Carica x Palmata hybrid..
Did you test the seeds ?

Francisco

Yes, I did. They sink!

Francisco,
I have a carica x palmata hybrid plant that is quite beautiful but as I do not have the wasp it is probably no good to me. Any suggestions?

Mike,

The fact that your fig is a hybrid does not mean that it needs to be pollinated. Alma is a hybrid, for example.

The fig featured in this thread may not or may be a hybrid, also it may need or need not a wasp. It is hard for me tell at this time.
But there are several people outside California who asked for cuttings and grow it. I hope they will help to answer the pollination question.

Igor, it's too bad that you live in Cal, I would like to do a trade and see how they do in South Florida. Okay, being a newbie, what does sinking of the seeds indicate??

It means that the wasps did their job and pollinated the fig.
But, the seeds from my VdB, Conadria, Long Yellow sink too!
All my figs are pollinated!
Send me a PM if you want to trade

Mike,

Also experimenting a Carica x Palmata (DFIC0023), rooted late spring 2013 in pot, a beautiful tree
Did not pay close attention to it and it grew almost like in the tale of the Jack's beanstalk ! very strong.

At over 6' its apical buds were gently pinched and a lot of figs sprouted... may be 30 or more on this year's growth,  and a dozen or so in last year's wood.

Being very close to the Caprifigs it got pollination from the very beginning but some figs dropped.
The remaining  figs were apparently caprificated and are growing to a decent size and changing color now. Looks like that its receptivity period is very short and not correctly phased with the availability of the ripe Profichi's.
Estimate the first figs to be ripe in a week or two, and will then show pictures

Reading past post exchanges in the forum, from coast to coast members and their experiences, I believe one may safely conclude now that this hybrid behaves as a Smyrna..its breeders also said the same thing !

Francisco

yup... a lot of hybrids i see have fuzz...makes sense

Igor, you  have the most interesting ways to show off your figs! your pictures are awesome as well.

Igor,
I have not heard of any producing ripe figs outside of "wasp territory". I have been told it won't produce without them. thx

Francisco,
I'll take some photos as this is a beautiful tree with lots of red coloring and very strong growth. thx
