It all started with the record Easter freeze. Figs were in full leaf and many setting. Some older varieties which have been in the ground 20 years or so lost about 10% of their wood. These included Hardy Chicago, E. Brown Turkey,Celeste and LSU Gold. Some of the younger varieties lost 30-40% of their wood. My older LSU Purple lost about 40% of its wood but recovered and set a very good crop. Actually, it is pretty much an everbearing type as it sets figs continually from mid July through October. All the older figs recovered nicely and set good crops.
I'm in zone 8 on the SC border and about 70 miles from the coast line with normal winter lows of 12-15 degrees for short periods which does no damage as long as the trees are fully dormant.
If the Easter freeze wasn't enough, an all time record drought is still on going with no relief in sight. There have been only 2 measurable rains since June 1. And yes, I spent the summer dragging hoses and waterers around pretty much on a daily basis. It also one of the hottest summers on record.
As a newcomer to the Forum, I will try to post useful info on my fig growing in the future.
In closing, I am to beg a little. If any of you have cuttings of Sal's to share, I would be deeply greatful.
