What a year :(

This has been a terrible year here on my farm in upstate NY.  We were flooded in June and I lost all my pumpkins and squash and 1/2 of my onions and sweetpotatoes. Then on July 4th I was diagnosed with Lyme Disease. It wasn't a difficult diagnosis . I was covered in lyme bullseye rash all over my body. Then we were flooded twice more in August and September. I did not ever break even on my Market Garden this year. I forgot all about the Fig trees in the greenhouse. I still managed to have fruit on three of the trees though it was smaller quantities than expected. I am finally feeling better after 5 weeks of antibiotic. Does anyone have any recommendations of new figs for me t otry? I have a brown turkey, celeste, two chicago hardys, a baby Marcellus and  a mystery fig that was mislabeled when I bought it. I was growing out three others but I am afraid I killed them when I potted them up a pot size in September.  It was hard for me then because we were cleaning up our flooded house. I think I under watered them. LOL. Being a farmer I am an eternal optimist. I need some cuttings. Who has some for me to try again? What are your recommendations for a 13787 zip code?

Linda

I hope you will have a better Happy New Year 2012; and hope the same for others too.
If you did not receive response to your cuttings request locally, remind me by PM in the beginning of April and I may be able to cut some more from ones already pruned.

I could send you no-id cuttings that are hardy in my region and maybe a couple from my yearling named varieties, early in the spring.

It really was a horrible growing season in the NE, hang in there. As far as recommendations for you, I would suggest Sal's, Marseilles blk VS, Atreano, Takoma violet and others that are hardy, rain tolerant, productive, and early.

Thanks so much for the ideas. I grow my figs in the greenhouse . They seem to like it in there. They are going to have a row of ginger and tumeric next to them in 2012. In the outside rows are okra and strawberries.:)

I have roll up sides  and raised beds. There is no heat or electric in my greenhouses.

OK, so you want mostly early season figs (because that is when sales are best), some mid season, and try a couple of late varieties. There are some low-tech tricks to extend the season like a second hoop, composting inside, rocket stoves, and adding thermal mass (water barrels painted black).

For market you want larger figs because there is less picking to fill up a quart and people just think bigger is better, unless they know better. They should look good! No one will buy them if they are small with a boring color or spotted and even if they taste great. Save the ugly/tasty ones for your best customers or try selling them to chefs.

My top suggestions for you to add are: Sal's C/Red Italian/Weeping, Atreano, Lynnhurst White, Italian Honey, Kathleen Black, something green and red like Verte/JH Adriatic, Sweet George, Longue d' Aout, Giant Black German, Stella, and Dotatto. A bunch of these varieties are actually up for sale on eBay right now from a few different F4F members, you may be able to get a good deal on a variety you want.

There are others who are not selling right now and can add themselves if they like. I would not mess with el cheapo nurseries or unknown figs from unknown people.

Hope this helps!

mommagoose, we have some cuttings en route and woud be happy to forward some. pm me if you still have room in that greenhouse.

I have extra Italian Honey cuttings. If you're interested I can send you a few. Will also have other stuff next fall.

Bump.

Sorry I was not paying attention and did not see these comments. I have ordered 16 fig cuttings on ebay. I think it is all I can handle for now. I really appreciate the offers though. I started 144 tomato plants 4 days ago and they have sprouted. I also started swiss chard, collards and red russian kale. Next week I will start 400 pepper plants. I will be back in business in no time. OH andginger and 5 pounds of tumeric to grow along side the  tomato plants.in the high tunnel should arrive sometime this week. I will be sprouting it along side the fig cuttings.  Thanks again for the offers. You guys are the best!!!
