What about Flanders in the Northeast

I think it originated out here, it was my favorite fig at Harvey C's. Well, a tie with Panache. Anyhow, is anybody growing this in the east?

I thought it originated in California. I think they recommend it for zone 8. I think it is a tremendous tasting fig. I had it at Bass', but I am a little scared to try to grow it in PA for hardiness.

i heard Florea is good for cold weather.

In a container it should do fine.

Donna,
I hope you give it a try :)
If it survives it will be worth it!
I had the chance to taste some fresh Flanders at a local farmers market over the Summer
They had a nice sweet flavor with slight strawberry flavor - Yum!
Another of Dr. Condit's releases from UC Riverside -
But where does it get the name?
Is Flanders named for someone?
Anyone know? My web searches proved "unfruitful" Haha!

Needs a lot of heat, but when it gets it, it is quite good, with multiple flavor layers.

I have two husky starts grown from Jon's fig cutting bonanza. My goal this year is to get the biggest strongest trees possible, maybe next year I will get some fruit, if they survive (after I lost so many big strong trees in my garage over the winter, I no longer count on anything!)

I had one for a few years. It never made more than a few figs a year, and itonly ripened one fig, and that was after being in the late fall after I had taken it into the sun room for 2-3 weeks later than it could have been outside. Mine always exhibited a good deal of FMV, so that may have contributed to the problem. I gave it away. I keep hoping in the future they are going to call me and tell me it's loaded with figs and they got many ripe ones.

The one I tasted was good though, and the skin is tender. It just spends a really loooooooooooooooooong time in the stagnant stage.

Calvin, the Flanders starts coming out of Jon's Fig Cutting Extravaganza seem untouched by FMV so far. They look just dandy. I will post some pictures later.

I don't care if they sit and sit and sit some more if, in the end, I get a couple of figs that taste anywhere near as good as the ones I had a Harvey C's, last summer. Of course, Harvey is in Isla Vista California and I am in Philadelphia PA.  Flanders is probably a whole different fig out here. At some earlier point I thought it was named for Flanders NJ (a thought that gave me hope!), but it appears not to be the case. Apparently, it's a California fig through and through.

Oh well. I remain in the fight against all odds etc. Same with my non-flowering pomegranates (except for the Salavatski) (sorry, ot).
