What are the best fig varieties for Ca, Bay Area zone 9 ?

Hello,
I am a newbie and I live in Bay Area. This year I am into planting fruit trees and I would like to start rooting a few fig varieties. I love to see things I planted grow.
What figs varieties would you recommend? Which are best for containers and which for ground?
Thanks

Hello Figarita,
I am zone 9 in Menlo Park, Started a year ago ,I am trying every fig I can get, . In the Bay Area we have a lots of micro climates as you probably know, cool summers with fog by the ocean and high heat in the Mission or East Bay  for example, the same day, so you have to know your climate well if you want to be precise with your plantings.
In Menlo I plant everything in containers , no choice , just have a back yard and a balcony, it's regularly warm/hot from now till oct/nov, so I hope to have enough heat for a Panachee for example.
A Mission fig gets quite large so ground would be more adequate for it to reach its full potential, , an Ishia green/black should do well in a container.Other factors are what size container can you provide, are you able/willing to root prune regularly, adjust your growing medium ....

Panache is a very long season fig. Mary Lane is often recommended for coastal environments and is quite good.

For an idea of the early season figs, see the post at the top of the Forum about ripening order.

Dan,
thanks for posting that it was enjoyable to read.

Thanks everybody for their input.
