What are you doing this time of year?

We'll keep it fig related.  ;)
This is the time of year I get my game plan in action.  Every year, I tend to add more gadgets and accessories for my obsession.  When I think I have all that I need, I find something that will either automate watering better, or make a task a little easier, such as using a reciprocating saw for root-pruning.
So right now, I'm gathering items for a drip irrigation system that will run from my rain barrels.  I'm going to use the spray head emitters, as I think this will be better for the larger pots.  Also going to add a transfer pump to the rain barrel to get enough pressure to go thru the irrigation lines.
Half of my collection is in SIPs, using the rain-gutter grow setup.  This works great.  But I want a few trees to really spread their 'wings' and use larger pots which is why I'm going to try drip irrigation.
Other than that, I'll start rooting cuttings in early March so they can be in the clear cup by April and start their life in a greenhouse.  This will help them get stronger quicker.

What are you up to this time of year? (Beside stressing over broken dormancy like I am.)

Also going to try some kind of irrigation system.  Between watering my pots and my raised beds all by hand last year, I'm looking to save some time/effort.

Two dozen or so cuttings are growing nicely, out of that I figure I'll get 8-12 nice plants once I do the shuffle to adjust them to the outside.

Other than that just trying to get onions, peppers, tomatoes started.  I have no idea what I'm going to do when the grow room gets too overcrowded.  Spring can't get here fast enough.

Building aquaponics system.  Moving everything out of greenhouse.

I sifted my compost yesterday and potted up my soil in every bucket that I could find in preparation for repotting my clones. My red wigglers should arrive soon so I am prepping my empty cat litter buckets as worm bins. I am also acclimating the clones to my very dry environment. It is 56% relative humidity now, but by 2 pm it should be about 15% RH. Just a few of the many things I am doing in my yard.

It's time for me to turn the garden soil and prepare to plant a 20x20 patch
of ever bearing strawberries. Ive had bunny manure and hay mix
covering the gardens to kill weeds over winter. Now it needs turned over.
Planning my fig row extensions.
I have2- 6" tomatoes and 3 bell pepper plants to plant as soon as night
temps stay above 45. Relaxing time is almost over here.

That is my weather.
Looks good for the year except 2 nights at 35.
Might get my garden started a couple weeks early this year.

Moving the last figs out of the greenhouse, shutting down the larger T5 grow-light setup, just finished putting about 6 trees in the ground, mulching around the in-ground trees. I also picked up a few pickup loads of composted horse manure from a local farmer for top dressing the fruit trees.

Other time spent working on improving my setup for growing blueberries, and adding 3 types of blackberries. Also negotiating with the wife on what part of the sunniest area of the yard she can use for an herb garden, instead of another fig tree.

Do still have a few trees (citrus and avocado) to replace that did not make it through our very brief, but chilly, cold snap. Maybe more room for some more figs......

I am rooting lots and lots of cuttings and following you.  This is my first time growing figs as you know.
Next step will be potting these in one gallon pots and so on.

Deciding which trees to plant in the ground...and where. Running out of space.

I am rooting fig cuttings, doing the fig shuffle with my potted fig trees that have decided to wake up early, pruning my muscadine vines and trying to figure out the best organic weed control for my in ground trees, maybe a living mulch of some kind just until they are established.

Whispering softly to the cuttings, looking for source of perlite, planning for more space after I up-pot the seedlings and cuttings.

Planning how to use my limited space and changing my mind every 3 days :-)

All I have been doing is praying, praying my newly rooted fig plants makes it to the next level. Right now, 4 plants are out of the humidity/heat chamber and in a window in direct sun.

one step at a time ;)

Rooting cuttings , including those of Col. Littmans' that I will be giving away this fall... taking inventory of what trees truly did and did not survive last falls' hurricane and subsequent flooding, working in both my school's and my home garden...

But right now Im looking at all of my peach and nectarine trees in full bloom and hoping that mother Nature does not throw a late season freeze our way...

But we still have citrus on the trees and Im only a couple of weeks away from harvesting Loquats, so life is pretty darned good :)

Well, I envy you guys down south, starting your season.  Based on history (and the forecast) there are still nights coming here that will be well below freezing (23 - 27 F).  So I'm trying to be patient.  I've had too many past disappointments after extrapolating 70 degree days in February.

So like some others, I'm up-potting the bold cuttings, nursing the shy ones, wondering how many pots I can manage, and planning how to use limited outdoor space.

Potted a bare root jujube and pakistan mulberry today, plus a blackberry and red raspberry. Shuffling around my bins of cuttings since I have no room left. Got my greenhouse yesterday, so I need to find time to put it together and start monitoring temps and figuring out how to heat it at night. Gonna need to dig up 4 potted trees and get them into the GH and start moving cuttings out there. Also need to build a raised bed and get soil for it. My pepper seeds are not doing good at all, so I need to figure out whats uo there. Stupid job is really getting in the way of my gardening work.

I dunno about how lucky we are.. I like winter when it comes..

Spent most of duck season hunting in a T Shirt and I'm mowing actively growing grass in February... and had to mow in January and December as well... sigh...

Well I had to turn on AC a few days ago as I heat with wood and I'm lazy so average winter temp in house is 61 so 75 feels HOT.

I'm selling cuttings and just starting the process of rooting another 300 trees. Also chasing down a few varieties I want.

My dog and favorite person is aging (9) and having some issues getting up so as we are both fat we started a diet yesterday and started morning walks today.

Trying to make room for more plants.
Eating tons of venison - makes dog happy.
Just finished 2 ½ pounds of Canada Goose Breast jerky --wow was that good.
Trying to decide on chicken breeds. and designing new coop.
Putting up bird and bat boxes.
Trying to get a decent picture of a Yellow Bellied Sapsucker.
Getting tackle ready to go after some Crappie (my favorite fish to eat out of freshwater) in my new stocked farm pond.
Charging both clippers as Mosby (dog) is getting a bath and haircut in the AM.

Still trying to answer a few questions that haunt me.

Franky (Ciccio? Maybe?)

Right now I'm losing my marbles wondering what I'm going to do if it stays this warm in Toronto...I have trees in the garage that I'm worried will come out of dormancy and freeze later on...

I am hoping you might share some of your SIP intelligence.... I'd like to put something together to water my plants while I'm away...I looked into several "hose timer" type units however I'm concerned about leaving a water supply on with a timer in charge while I'm away. A failure could be disastrous. With a water reservoir, the risks are minimal.... I have no experience with SIP's. I don't even know where to start. If you have pictures or know a good guide... I would appreciate them...

At the risk of committing a faux pas, here's a discussion of SIPs from the other forum.  Halfway through, I describe what I did.

Hey Joe,
Watch these videos.  I mainly use the rain gutter grow system, which is attached to my rain barrels.  Totally hands free.

Use these concepts to get you going:

Excellent. Thanks!
