What cultivar you love, and wich one you dislike and the reason behind it?

I will start this tread myself:
I love Maltese Falcon, for the taste, color, size, but I dislike it because it is not cold hardy so I can grow it inground here in NJ!
I love Celeste for resistence to rain, and taste, but dislike it for dropping fruits, and low productivity!

YOUR turn NOW

I love my Hardy Chicago and EL. Sals they are very reliable in my big containers and excellent to my taste for 1 sweet type and 1 rich type.

I learning to not like santa cruz dark (ucdavis) in full 2nd season dropped breba and now main crop dropping 2 years in row. One more season for this plant if it does the same i get rid of it .

Favourite for now is D.King. Variant is reliable, abundant figs & pretty good tasting. Terrible is Brunswick, related to taste. In time, I hope Bochum(Germany), Granthams R., Dauphine, Doce, Gino, Capelas etc will rival DK. I have other good tasty fig variants like Negronne, Hollier, MVS, HC etc but they don't give many figs like DK. Hence, reliability & productivity with good taste is the top of my criteria. Note -- I find the smaller figs have better intense flavor & are much more appreciated but insufficient for family consumption. Bummer.

Martin, I am keeping an eagle eye on my Santa Cruz Dark & Adriano(fig).

I like Marseilles VS Black and Sal EL mostly for ripening a good portion of the crop before the frost. But I wish their fruit was twice as big in diameter (it is not a real dislike though).
It may probably change in future years.

Dislike: Black Madeira and Col de Dam.  This is my third year trying to root these varieties.  Still do not have either one.

It's interesting seeing other people's preferences.  One of the reasons I like Celeste is because it is a perfect bite sized fig.

I love Black Madeira - best taste there is, but needs a hotter, longer season than I usually get.

Dislike does not sound strong enough for Brown Turkey - no sweetness, no flavor.

I love the following for their excellent flavor:

  • Brooklyn Dark (Jelly texture and excellent flavor)
  • Black Madeira (unique tasty flavor)
  • Barada (honey, nutty figgy flavor)
  • Panache (beautiful and tasty)
Cons
  • Brooklyn dark (ripens late in October, and splits if it rains)
  • Black Madeira, (ripens late)
  • Barada (Although it doesn't ripen late, it loves heat and  doesn't like rain when it's ripening)
  • Panache (it is too late for the north east, doesn't develop good flavor if the weather is cool.

Fantastic thread Herman, and thanks to everyone for the information.

I am learning a lot already from this thread.

Best wishes to all.
