What do I do with a cutting?

I have been offered a cutting from an Italian fig tree.  What is the best way to root it?  Should I use this method?

This will be my first time.

Anyone?

Read older posts, about rooting in a bag, rooting in a bag with sphagmum moss, and "New Bag" method.

Cassandra,

I don't think there is a "best" rooting method.  Over time and with experience, any method you use and tweak will be as good (close enough) as any other.  I've tried the method you referenced.  FOR ME, part of the method (using the baggie) works well.  For the remainder, I'm going in a different direction.  Others have had very good luck with the method.  Like I said, think of it as a springboard and see where it works and where it needs some work for you.

Also, if you can get 3 or more cuttings it improves your chances of having a successful strike.  Or if the tree is nearby, ask if you can air-layer the limb rather than cut it.

Good luck,

I would love to try airlayering with this but feel like it would be an imposition on the giver.  I'm going to have to take my chances on a cutting... possibly only one.  I don't know how big his tree is.

I'll do the best I can with the bag method.  I was worried that the method was different with non-dormant cuttings.  I don't know much!

Thanks for steering me in the right direction.

Cassandra ,
also you can go to page 43 on this forum from January and read from that point thru March.
At this time of year is when some members are starting there cuttings and posting pictures.
Also Michal did a simple video showing how to root them

Cassandra,

I don't have much experience with figs, but I do with other shrubs and trees.  I think "when" is just as important as "how".  Cuttings at this time of year may be hit or miss, but air-layering is almost a sure thing.  I would try to do the air-layer.  Talk to the giver and explain that it wouldn't be too inconvenient to set it up and wait four weeks.  Or wait till March and try the cutting at that time.  Good luck.
