What do You do with All Your Fig Cuttings which Rooted?

  • Jed

I noticed a lot of people rooting a lot of fig cuttings. I am sure not every can grow every fig into a tree in their yard or property. So, what do all of you do with the fig cuttings you rooted?

I give most of them away to friends and family who are within driving distance.  My figs are all over Georgia now.  Sometimes I keep a few around to use for trading.

Quite a few people at my workplace are foodies and like to grow their own food. I hoping to give them potted fig plants as early Christmas presents.

I trade cuttings to get some new kinds for my collection. I'm working on getting two to three of each kind I grow. Extras I sell on ebay and donate to charity through mission fish. I have had a few members donate or sell me bulk cuttings just for that cause.

They get sold to fund maintenance of the Figs 4 Fun Collection or are traded for new things to add to the collection.

Go out and plant them in the wild somewhere hidden from the public. In the future some fig lover can enjoy a fig if he/she comes across it.

Jed,

Most of the fig trees I have that are extra first go to family and then after that to other members of the F4F. Normally I just ask for shipping or swap/trade with other members.

@Jarrett you have a good idea there. May have to try and see if this is possible.

i have a new system. depends on how many varieties and how much room i have, i start narrowing down the number of cuttings i'll move to 1 gal. if the cuttings are not very precious to me, i'll pick 3 rooted cuttings and move them to cup, and only move 2 to 1 gal. that way, i have a back up. after 1st winter, one of them will be moved to larger container and other will go to whoever wants that fig. if the variety is very special to me, i'll root all of them, and move all of them to 1 gal. whatever is left over after 1st winter, i'll keep one and rest will go to new home.

I usually am Spreading them around, I am getting a lot of cuttings given to me so I just send them to people or give them away to people near by.  I feel bad to throw the trees out and since people are so generous and friendly here, I hate to sell them since I do not have business so I leave that to people who do have a business.  For me this is all for fun so the enjoyment for everyone is the most important and sometimes I just grow the trees out just to chop them down and send for cuttings to more people.

chivas, i feel the same way.. only thing is i'm running out of room, and at this point not many near me wants figs. most of the ones i gave to them are dead since they are not doing what i do for the trees. mainly checking on the water and fertilize them and so on on daily base. i used to ship them to other members, but that's starting to add up too. so i'm limiting the number of plants i up pot to 1 gal. only sensible way for me. i really hate throwing away trees..

I have been propagating my Dominick Italian Fig trees for about 15 years and have given them out to  many "fig worthy" gardeners. There are many folks around here growing him and when he goes dormant in the late fall this wonderful group here will be getting theirs. It is so rewarding when people send me pictures of Dominick in their homes. Almost as great as eating one

Besides all of the above I've given some to community gardens so that all their members can enjoy figs.  I've also given some to churches and they either sell them or use the fruit to feed the poor (or their elders).

I'm a total failure at rooting figs. I buy or trade for my plants.

Wow, that is a lot fig love.

I worked so hard to make them root and yes many made only to sucumb to gnats, my survival rate is very low, the dupplicates I have I either trade or give away as gifts.

giving them to church is a good idea.. i gave one to buddhist temple.. i might give one each to the churches that our pack and troop use. what would be neat..

I think it would be neat to give them to elementary or middle schools, so that the kids can try and grow their own trees.

tamar, two yrs ago, i showed cub scouts how to root the cuttings and send them home with 3-4 cuttings per boy. only two of them were able to root the cuttings.. one was my son, but i'm sure you know i helped. other was this boy who has 3 sisters. few weeks later, i got an email from his father saying if i had other cuttings. i said sure, but what happened to one he rooted? he says "his lil sister pulled the cuttings out of the cup to see how the roots were doing!"..

Oh yeah, I totally wouldn't trust kids to go home with cuttings. It would have to be in a school where you could place them in a sunny window, and then as they root and grow you can teach the kids about photosynthesis, nitrogen cycle, etc. And if any get over-watered and start to mold, you can teach them about fungus.

Since it's my first year rooting and growing figs, I have an overabundance of 1 gallon trees.  I'm going to see how they overwinter in my garage before I start getting rid of my duplicates to see what comes out alive next spring.  Ultimately, I'll have 9 trees in the ground, and at least 30 in pots.  If I ever move from my current house, I can bring the potted ones with me.
