They indicate the origin of that particular "variant", as a way of distinguishing them from other variants that are supposedly the same variety. Oftedn different variants perform differently, maybe better growers, or better fruit or whatever.
For instance, I have about 2 dozen Celeste variants, JN, GM, IS, PM, AA001, SD06, and so forth. Some are just better than others.
