what fig really stood out from the crowd this yr?

just thinking about what figs really set them apart from the rest this yr. i dind't have too much, but following really stood out.

Paradiso Gene <- just getting really good, even with all the rain.
RdB <- only had one, but that one was amazing.. it's different. had more warm taste. very comfy.
CdDB <- very very good. strong berry flavor and something more. only had two.
Calvert <- tart, it stood out.
Kathleen's Black <- sort of like Paradiso Gene and RdB mixed together. warm, comfy.. enjoyable.

i'm still waiting on Figo Preto and Black Madeira, but i'm not sure if they are going to give me any figs this yr. the night temp has turned to upper 50 already. Figo Preto might surprise me, i noticed that it changed color yesterday.

few figs were let down this yr.

VdB <- too much rain this yr. it produced a lot of fig, but none of them had that quality of last two yrs.
Ischia White <- very productive also. but first yr. figs. not bad, but nothing really stood out. will have tosee next yr.
Genovese Nero <- mine looks rather different from the rest. so not sure. i know source is very reliable so i hope to get better result next yr.
White Greek <- much much better than last yr. but didn't really stood out to the ones that were good.
Ischiia Green <- has potential. nothing special
Paradiso Bronze/Black <- not sure which is which yet. it too early to tell me much. will have to monitor further
LdA <- was good, but only 1 fig to really tell much of anything

looking forward to new figs next yr. there are few that i'm waiting to taste.. St. Rita, Niagara Black, Soccoro Black, and few others.

I've tried the following this year, scale of 1-10...

  • Carini unknown - 8
  • Gino Black - 9
  • Italian Honey - 9
  • Brown Turkey - 8
  • Celeste (I think) - 7

Guys, thanks for your reports!
Pete, does it look that the Figo Preto and the Black Madeira is the same fig?

greenfig, to me, they look different. only slightly. the growth habit is little different, and figs are also little different. the leaf shape is very similar. Figo Preto seems to be ripening faster then BM. shape is similar enough, but the BM is more rounder. will have to taste them to see if they taste the same. problem is it will be another 2 or 3 yr before they will be at maturity to give full profile.

Pete, I had this one Genovese Nero ripening and it got knocked off before ready. Does it look like yours?

I'll add my list later after some more get ripe and I taste them.

yours look more like mine. others i have seen were jack black. one thing i noticed about my Genovese Black is, they are really good size. and they get knocked off easy. looks as if they are too heavy to be hanging on there. pretty figs. sweet, but it doesn't look like harvey's or rafed's. leaf shape and

Pete, how does this compare with your leavers?

For me, Colar was the stand out by a mile.

mike leaves are similar too. leaves are also similar to harvey's GN. it just might be the rain and the lousy weather. will have to see what comes out of it next yr. i mean, my VdB which was "only fig i need" from last yr to "is it really VdB?" this yr..

Vista Mission......taste. productivity, ripening and look...

Had my first Marseilles VSB this year.  Amazing taste.  St Rita was an unusually good fig, too.  Both are far better than Hardy Chicago, Smith and Celeste.  I had Preto and Ronde dB but they were from young plants and were unremarkable.

This year was very bad here ,as climate,so all my figs produce under quality fruits.
The best to fight this kind of bad conditions and make reasonable good fruits was:
Adriatic JH,on a scale,1 to 10,it deserved an 8.
In Other Summers, like 2010,The same plant was a 10,on the same scale.
Here is what I harvested today:
The Summer season ends here on October 25,so the late cultivars like Col de Dame,Vasilika Sika and Preto, are not fully ripe yet.
They are some of the best tasting so if the climate improve I might have better tasting in the near future.

Of the newer trees, Black Ischia, Preto, Col de Dame were amazing, but only a very few figs were produced. Vasilika Sika was also excellent and the most productive of the younger trees so I'd have to say Vasilika Sika was best overall, excellent taste, very productive and good sized figs. A couple surprises were CM7 and Luigi 2, both were exceptionally good and off of young trees so they have great potential. Of my older trees I must say Aubiqua Petite and VDB both really taste great this year and both have put out and are still putting out lots of figs, they are very productive and dependable and not coincidentally they are my oldest trees.
