spring is just around the corner. what figs are you looking to taste this yr?

i have a short list...

CdDN
Niagara Blk
St. Rita
I-258
Madeira Blk
Kathleen's Blk
JH Adratic
RdB
Excel
187-25
Beall
Sucrette
Figo Preto
and others...

Makes my head hurt even trying to think about it.

com'on wills.. gotta have something special you are looking forward to :)

Well if it was just one I would say Sangue Doce.  It is an Unknown that is said to taste like the best peach a person has ever had.

i heard about figs that taste like peach.. jon and rafed talked about it sometime ago. sweet blood is it? will have to look out for that one.

I know some don't like figs that taste like another fruit but I do.  Have a second unknown from Texas that also is supposed to taste like a peach so we shall see.

This year I am hoping to get to taste CDDN and red sicilian. Hopefully we get some better weather this season.

i still don't know what "fig taste" is. i guess that's a fig without any other fruit taste. growing Hardy Chicago just to find out what that is. VdB and CdDB are great for berry taste. Paradiso Gene in fall has melon taste. i heard Genovese Nero has sort of grape taste. peach would be a nice addition since growing peach is not something that i would do at home. old superstition with koreans and growing peach at home..

Pete,

I would consider fig taste to be like a fig newton.

Off topic I know but since it is your thread:)  What is the Korean superstition about growing peaches at home?   I have 7 peach trees.heck a couple of them already have quarter size peaches on them.

old saying is that peaches has spirits. since they are not human, ghost will take over. so peach trees will have ghosts. or something like that. when i mentioned trying to grow peaches at home, my wife, my mom, and mother in law all freaked out. back about 20 yrs ago when i used work at atlanta, i used to drive through peach orchard every weekend. they sure have beautiful flowers.

Our peach is in bloom now and yep!  It has beautiful flowers!  I'm looking forward to tasting Strawberry Verte, Panache, RDB, LSU Gold, Paradisio, Galbun, Hardy Chicago, Desert King, Bourgisette Gris, VDB, my unknown Wild One, Marseilles VS Black, and a few other non-fig fruits.
Suzi

Would like to have: ( Willing to trade with my all established fig plants collection; Panachee, LSU Purple, Conandria, Chicago Hardy, Latarula Cuttings... and later we will have Negrone, Violette de bordeaux )

Ronde De Bordeaux
Jurupa
LSU Gold
LSU Yellow
Black Madiera
Grantham's Royal
Adriatic
Col de Dame
Black Portugal
Genovese Nero

In one short sentence what ever survive the freezing condition we had in the northeast.
Mark

NEW

Niagara Blk                   Dauphine                N De Barbentane
Col de Dame Gris           Blanche Alasche       Nefiach

LIKE TO HAVE MORE - Excellent Last Season

Yugo Yellow            Aubique Petite
Gypsy                    Granthams Royal
Weeping Fig            Cdd Noir

pete, when left on the tree to shrivel a bit, morle's paradisio tastes like super good peaches with just a hint of fig.

i think if blindfolded, people would guess they were eating peaches.

my fav.

susie,

Joe's Paradiso will have lot of issue down here. from what i have heard from other members growing that at their location, humidity won't agree with that fig. main reason why i haven't look that up yet.

I have a good shot at tasting Valle Negra this year.  I *might* get to taste Longue d' Aout, Bari, MBVS, and Dark Portuguese.  Depends on how much damage the cold winter did to them.  Valle Negra is in the garage, so no worries on winter damage there unless something else hurts it.

No ! Hardy Chicago taste nothing like a fig Newton on personal palate and is one of my old time favorites to eat .
It has a rich fig taste just like Ray Givens mentioned in his old video.

Fig Newtons are Gross taste nothing like a FIG tried em once and never again.

Pete looking forward to taste some dark type of course cultivars that bore not much fruit do to there age and me taking many off for overall health of plant.

martin,

someday, i would like to see the list of figs that you have. i know you have dark types and i've been trying to collect things that you posted. so far only tasted RdB and VdB that you have. Black Madeira.. well. i'll have to see how it does here. got Hardy Chicago Paradise Nursery since you have that one. ordered Vernino.. have Pastiliere going.. but i know you put your in the can.. let see what else.

I think most likely this year I'll have BT, Alma, Verde Ventotene, Celeste, and an UNK Greek. This is year 2 for growing figs for me and the first year, I may actually have some of my own. I'm very excited.

oh.. i forgot Marius' Unk Greek Purple. i know it was named.. but forgot the name. and JoAnn's Purple too.

 All of them!

Last year Petite Negri and HC were great, so I can't wait for more. All of last years starts put on immature figs that I picked off, so this year will be a ton of new tastes. I hope that despite their age they still put out some flavors that leave me wanting more. So, outside of doing an inventory list, I just have to say all of them.

Pete,
Great list!
I'd like to sample ALL of those this year too - Haha!!! :)

Most figs of our collection are 12" and under right now AND under a year old, so not sure if any of those will produce this year. However, I'm most excited about tasting our own Conadria, Flanders, & Panache this fruiting season, which should be large enough - Fingers Crossed!

'Little Debbie' Fig Bars are pretty tasty compared to Fig Newtons (but nothing in comparison to a fresh fig, of course!) They're like bigger fig newtons, see?

Also just found this while searching for the other image, these are probably Fig Newton size :)

Pete
i forgot about our young Vernino mine grew slow at first making the figs but i pull them off except 2 which just started swelling and turning
as season came to a close.

Grew slow at first but that was fixed , should be able to taste some this coming season.
Hopefully they are in the exceptional category .

Seeing as I have some ten foot tall trees I should be able to taste RIPE Celeste, LSU Gold, TxBA1, and Marseille. What I really want to taste are Petit Negri, Black Mission, JH Adriatic, Sucrette, Green Ischia, Black Bethlehem, Verdal Loungue, O'Rourke and Hollier. All of the second group are still small but hopefully I will get at least one RIPE FIG. Last year, with our Biblical rain fall in the Spring, blessed me with many figs containing large amounts of slightly sweet water. Except for Hollier I have never tasted any of the second group. Surely I'll get one fig out of the bunch.
