I finally heard a few a couple of days ago. I think I caught one yesterday hanging out on a MBVS.

That is a really beautiful picture. I hate bugs but for some reason I love Cicadas, they are really pretty. Thanks for the picture.

lately we have number of them around my office building. for awhile, i thought they weren't going to show up. i'm sure by sept, there will be more. i seems to remember last pack family caming in sept, there were ton of them around the camp site.

One of those lucky shots. I ran into the house to get the camera and he had moved to the rear of the branch out of sight. I pulled the branch down and he let me take 1 picture before fluttering away.

KK, May I use the picture as a screensaver please?

Beautiful. I hear one every so often, but it has not been the "invasion" we were supposed to have. Too bad. Known as "Chantui," the dried, molted shells are used in Chinese medicine to dispel wind-heat, which causes lung and throat issues. I had hoped to collect some, but cannot find a single shell here.

Great picture Keith - he looks like he's guarding that fig !

They must all be in my yard, lol, every time I walk out I see a few, I can always count on finding an empty shell at the bottom of my satsuma tree.

Oh and that is an awesome pic by the way

Cicadas are sooo neat! SEVENTEEN YEARS OR THIRTEEN YEARS TO HEAR THEM SING!
I use to be scared of them thinking they were giant flies on steroids. But after learning and watching National Geographic with David Attenborough (cool dude and my favorite celebrity), I had a change of heart. Nice picture and awesome shot!

Fig pal,
Jenny

yupe, giant fly on steroid. i refuse to step on them.. too much mess.

They symbolize resurrection and rebirth, kind of like the phoenix. A lucky sign.

Where we were kids we used to pick the casings off the pine trees and put them on our noses!
I was in Chicago during one of the 17yr cycles and I've never seen such a mess in all my life. They were literally everywhere and the gutters along the streets were filled to capacity. They blew through the air like rain. It was bizarre and kind of fun at the same time when you saw them land in peoples hair!

Wow, I've never seen them like that, just a handful here and there. I bet that was kind of weird.

Oh, it was beyond weird....it was a once in a lifetime event. I remember driving to work and the cicadas rained down in sheets much like a heavy rain does. It was in waves and they pelted my car like small hail. The windshield wipers frequently got clogged and I had to add wiper fluid every other day. This was not something that lasted a day or two... we're talkin over 2 weeks of literal onslaught! I'll never forget it.

I was in Princeton University in 2004 summer. The noise is really load, all the tree is covered with cicadas and their shell. There is no way to walk without stepping on them. I thought the cycle is 17 years and should be this year. But I saw none so far this year.

starting to see more of them.. i guess the weather is working for them now.

I am happy to live in the south where we get to hear them all summer every summer. I find their noise relaxing and the way it swells and wanes like the ocean.
