What have you learned from this Forum?

I didn't know a rock from a fig when I first joined.

Since that day, I have learned how to root a green or dormant cutting, how to prune, how to graft, how to actually eat or grill a fig, who the trusted sellers on Ebay are, Which figs are the best, and if you put your wish list on your profile, members will contact you with free cuttings...

Much more to learn, but I'm listening!

How great the internet really is, this forum serves to represent the best of what the net can be.  The original intent was to make data readily available to a network of users (originally, ARPA and DARPA) and this is validation.  Suzi, I have a very similar list but I think the lesson here is the willingness of complete strangers to communicate on a common interest.  Figs are only the subject, participation is the driver.

I learned there's a damned lot to learn out there.  ;)

We sure as hell learn it a lot faster when we work together.

One thing is that there are tons, tons of different fig varieties!
Another is that the fig community is a great group of people.

I learned that everyone likes pics, we all love to show off a little and Martin only eats dark figs. All kidding aside, this is a great place for learning all different tactics for growing figs, and it's a darn good place for making friends across the country and beyond.

There are more figs then purple and green! Fig fanatics are fabulous!  I know how to graft and air layer - but now I will actually attempt it with my new friends behind me for support and help.  If I wish for it (in writing for all to see) they will come!

A common interest builds bridges.

That I did not know jack about figs.

That enlightenment is a wonderful thing when shared.

That we are more alike than different.

That the written word can breed tolerance and understanding.

That common ground can be found.

That I am not strange.

That greed is not good. (Gordon Gecko thing)

That many people from many walks of life can get along. (Rodney King thing)

I've learn a lot from "0" about figs  , such as Propagation technique , figs varieties ,figs taste & quality ,horticulture....Etc.

Hope to get more knowledge about figs from this forum.

I have learned enough to write a book, but won't. It's not all the big things, but all the little things that add up when all brought together. Everyone has contributed something along the way.

i learned what everyone should have learned in kindergarten. share :)

Here is what I know to be true:

When growing fig trees, practical knowledge gleaned from direct, intelligent, observations, trumps any textbooks, and, "how-to" articles, written in gardening magazines, when it comes to growing figs.  If you run into difficulties, all you have to do is describe a problem, or ask for advice, and forum members will jump right in an give you all the information you seek.  Direct, and to the point.

Also, chose a variety that will do well, and ripen figs in your climate zone...and then, zero in on the best variety you can find.  Saves years, and saves many tears.

Grow some popular varieties for cutting-wood, and air-layer propagation. Then swap with other growers for the varieties you want.  "Quid pro quo"...the best way to go...

For the most part forum members are very helpful, and friendly.  It's a small coterie of like-minded people, and we all want others to triumph in their growing efforts.

Figs are probably the easiest fruiting trees that anyone could grow, and make an ideal gift for a young child/grandchild to nurture.
