I live in zone 6b about 40 miles north of the zone 7 line, research has showen that the varieties will do well in my zone with winter protection for the first few year then should be ok after that.

I amdoing massive propagation at this time to put in 2 hedges of figs (to save on room) i am going to use hardy chicago in one of them. dont know if i should plant one kid only as the hedges or if i should switch it up a bit. any ideals about that i would love to hear. or if there is a concern with my list or somthing i should add let me know. i am working on a larger project than one person should take on alone but im a stuborn man acording to my wife.

when thes trees get a little older i should have a little bit of a variety to share.
again all who have helped me than you.

disclamer:
No fig trees or cuttings were hurt during this rooting process other than the intal snip. nor have the praying mantis's who have taken up homes in the fig trees.

the identaty of those who have sent cuttings along with thier locations have been changed or omitted to protect the inicent.

sorry i couldnt resist the disclamer. ;)

Personally, I like the idea of a hedge being made up of many different cultivars.   This gives you a (hopefuly) longer harvest season as different trees will produce ripe fruit at different times.

On the other hand...a hedge of all one kind of tree would be more uniform looking in terms of growth habit, leaf shape and color, times of new growth and dormancy, etc etc.

So I guess it depends on personal preference more than anything...

i thought about it being uniform, but i also thought about planting kinds with with the same growth habbits together. i want close to the same hight and width. wouldnt look to good star stepped.  but i still have plenty of time.

I am planning a hedge also, it will be fairly small.  I am planning on a variety of figs for the hedge so I will be able to have a variety of figs.

When I started the garden last spring, I had the utilities come out and mark them.  The picture shows the backyard near the alley where I will put the hedge.  I think it is about 25'.  Aside from my neighbors trees on the right side of the fence, that area is in full sun - especially the spot closest to the driveway.
