What if they all lived??

Just curious.  Many people here are started large numbers of cuttings.  I assume most people expect some losses in the process.  Would you be in trouble if every single cutting grows roots and thrived?  The reason this popped into my head was that my Uncle decided one year to start blueberry cuttings.  He started with 80 using this reasoning.  Start with 80 and ~half will root so 40.  Then figured ~half of those would die in first year so down to 20.  Maybe lose a few more to accidents, moving location, deer ect so at the end he planned on 10 good bushes.  Fast forward 5 years and my Uncle now has 78 blue berry bush stuck all over the yard.  One of those losses was one he gave to me and my sister ran over it with the mower..

Some local varieties I collected will go in the ground, the boutique French varieties will stay in pots and be fawned over for the next 50 years or until I die and the rest will be sold locally on NJ or NYC Craigslist or maybe EBay blech! : (

idea is same. root about 3 of each varieties. yes, last winter is ended up with 70 or so 1 gal pots. i did something stupid and killed number of them. gave away few, and still have 50 or so in garage waiting for the spring. some are promised to other members and friends, some will go to trash can.

there are about 40 or so i'm rooting right now. i'm keeping only 1 or 2 of each varieties this winter. rest will be given to friends.

You could also auction them off to benefit the F4F foundation.

Simple. Root 3 of 1 variety, stick them in the same pot. Instant bush form.

If they all lived, everyone in my town would have a fig tree!  This is a town void of the tree!

Trash can? Message me if that's the case

Too funny. I always end up with more plants than I plan on and then buy more.  Maybe we should do some fig swaps like the poultry people do with birds.   I really don't feel comfortable selling live plant on ebay.  Too many regulations.

Then I'll have a lot of trees by the end of the summer. My goal this year is 90% success rate. I'm still at 100% so far, but I'm just getting started. And I'm not sure if one of the RdB's is still growing roots. The stick is awfully loose in the deli cup. Taking it out for inspection would probably damage it. So just have to wait and see.

I have over 150 cuttings in the fridge with some more coming. I'm starting about 10 each week. If go insane if I tried to do then all at once. I'll only keep one of each kind and give/sell the rest. That should leave me with about 60 different cultivars by the end of the summer.

I haven't told my wife that yet.

it's not that i don't want to ship my plants. just that way i pack 'em, postage is around $8-12... that's first class shipping, not even priority. it starts to add up. i don't like asking for shipping cost and my fig fund is limited. PayPal is fine, but that's not immediate cash to pay USPS. some suggested that i sell my plants, but that's too much hassle. i've been sticking to cutting trade. i still have few plants i need to ship out in spring, but that would be it... unless the trade is with something i'm willing to make box and all other stuff for.

my entire purpose of rooting is to help them all survive... i'm counting on it.

Of course if all my cuttings survived, I would have no room in my yard or my neighbors' yards.  So I hatched this crazy idea of planting fig trees while playing golf at some of the courses.  I'd carry the plants in my golf cart and plant fig trees along the fairways and around the tee boxes.   It's an upgrade to some of the landscapes, and when you're waiting to tee off or play through, you can grab a bite... or 4... or 5.

If you plan to throw away any Maltese Beauties or such, let me know! lol.

I keep extra cuttings in the fridge and I make extras for insurance. But all extras are shared with my friends.

james, there are reasons why they go into trash can. if they are all like Maltese Beauty, i won't have to put them into trash can :)

Can only assume most find homes with Friends, Family, Neighbors.  One member that was going cuttings crazy a couple years ago listed a lot on ebay within the last couple months I am sure many of us were bidding on them.

Fortunately  I have acres  too plant on so I have not had to euthanize  any figs intentionally.   I am establishing a “NO KILL” fig sanctuary, modeled after a “NO Kill” Pet shelter. For the small initial fee of $50 and a continuing annual fee of $10 I will assure that your fig babies  will live out their figgin days. Space is limited so reserve a place for your loved one now.

lol

Well, I think that to start one would have to keep in mind the space he owns.
Of course, nursing cuttings through the winter once you've bought the artificial lights is funny, cheap and easy.
For now I don't have the space problem - I'll have to push the fences, but that should be fairly easy to do - especially if the neighbors don't notice it LOL :)
Next winter might be a challenge - but I think that I'll try to sell the excess if any - I've planned to make backup trees in case of the winter goes crazy and if they all make it - mother trees and daughter trees - then I'll
sell or trade the daughters.
For now I haven't made more backups because I'm still evaluating some strains - I don't want to trade before I know what I would be trading.
Occasionally I threw some cuttings, and some rooted root suckers - But ok, a gardener is no softy ! or he'll loose his mind at each pruning season :( ...

Would early summer regional meet work to exchange potted 1 gallon trees that people no longer want?
Then a second during harvest season. I know someone mentioned doing one this fall on the east coast.

Actually I did as a joke but it could be fun.  I know the poultry people do Chickenstocks (like Woodstock only with Chickens) at an area like a campground or fairground.  That way they can sit around and gossip, exchange stuff and of course eat a bunch of food at various cookouts and stay.  That way if they have a long trip they can stay overnight and start the next morning.

Yes I am working on this same thing here in New Jersey except it will be $200 start up fee plus $50 per month per tree. We have a "tax" we have to pay to keep our fig trees safe :)

Rich,

Thanks for showing everyone what I great deal I am offering them. I am fractions of your fees. I offer adoptions as well, very reasonable priced, but only to carefully screened good homes , and if your Fig finds a new family you will receive a happy photo of your fig with his new stewards and a card at Christmas.

Schaplin, you phrased that as if you actually expected us to be planning ahead. Party pooper :P

I am liking this Figstock 2014 idea!
