What is the best tasting LSU Fig

Credit to LSU for producing so many high quality figs. To me the known LSU Figs(some are hard
to find) are

Scott Black                    LSU Gold                  LSU Red                LSU White Honey
LSU Black                      LSU Purple                LSU Thibodaux       LSU Brown
Hollier                           Champagne               LSU #156              LSU Scott Yellow(Brandy)
Everbearing                   Tiger                        LSU # 5                O'Rourke
LSU Improved Celeste     Jack Lily

Anymore known LSU variants out there ? Hence given so many LSU variants, can someone provide
feedback as to which is the best tasting LSU variety. LSU Red is the latest to be cited for its awesome
taste and equally high quality taste comes from Scott Blk. Some excellent traits from LSU variants is that it generally have close eyes and less prone to splitting with rain. LSU Purple is reported to be resistant to nematodes and it gets to be very good after year 4 or 5. Hollier was cited to have won best tasting fig
5 yrs in a row by Durio nursery. Hollier is such a good tasting fig with a reliable bountiful main crop -- enough to convince Adriano(fig guru, Canada) to grow it in the ground. He has less than 5 trees planted in-ground. And I never need to protect my Hollier in winter.

There is a possibility that Brandy may not be similar to LSU Scott Yellow or a LSU variant.

Lsu late black

Brandy is a name that James Robin applied to Scotts Yellow. Somewhere down the line some cuttings got mixed up and there are trees out there bearing the Brandy name producing dark figs so they are not Scott's Yellow, perhaps they are Scott's Black, who knows. I have one named Scott's Yellow / Brandy that produces dark figs. I also have a Scott's Black and if all goes well this year I might be able to compare the two. So if you own a Brandy it could be the real Scott's Yellow or an other fig which is dark.

"gene"

Cajun Honey is a sport or sibling of LSU Gold.

I have some of those listed variants, but not all. My picks would be- LSU S. Blk., LSU Red and O'Rourke. LSU 5 was rooted recently, so it will be an year to give any feedbacks on its taste.

Gold

nkesh099, where did you get the LSU Red?

Hi Vivian,

You will love the taste the of the LSU S. Blk. It's one of my top 5 best tasting, dark colored figs.

Greenfig,

It came from a good friend of mine. Due to his request, I will keep his name private.

Hi Vivian,

I appologize for delayed response to your question.

Yes, my LSU Red has produced for me for the past two years. I am happy with the its performance and production.

Navid.

I got interested by  LSU Scott's Yellow Fig (Brandy not ). It seems that LSU Scott's Yellow can produce two breba fig crops in one year + the main crop. That's a lot of figs (although it is not a rain tolerant)! Where is it possible to find it?

Yes Vivian. Very happy with its taste. A 10+

Navid.

My only dead fig tree after winter have to be LSU Red. What a bummer. Now I
need a "pity" tree. Also this was my worst winter rooting season -- none rooted.

No worries Paul. I will make sure that you'll get to have this variant again.
I lost close to two dozens of trees during the past few months. Some died during the dormancy and some were killed to the soil line back in April, when there was a sudden drop of temp into low 20s one early morning. Still waiting for those plants to resprout back. All the effort that I had put into growing those trees from cuttings, went down the drain.

That hurts.

I have 8 of the more popular varieties from the OP. I've tasted only 5 (IC, O'Rourke, Champagne, Tiger and Purple). The Champagne was a taste surprise, extremely sweet complex flavor, with a mild fig taste. One of the best tasting figs from last year. Sadly, Champagne, O'Rourke and Purple are currently re-sprouting from the soil line. Tiger, IC, Hollier, Black and Gold had minimum die back and hopefully will be productive this year.

O'Rourke has published on LSU Gold, Champagne, O'Rourke & Tiger. I am attaching those publications. Hopefully they are useful.

DWD2 - Thanks for posting the documentation in regards to those specific cultivars.   I had not seen them before - very useful.

Paully,

Great information about Hollier. I did not know how highly it has been rated up North. I would rate Improved Celeste and Scott's Black at the top of the LSU figs that I have grown and tasted.
