What is the white marker pen used on cuttings

Can someone please tell me the brand of white marker some of you use to write names on fig cuttings,  It was a life saver when I had an oops moment and I'd like to mark my cuttings with it from now on.

  Thanks,  Soni

Soni,

I believe it is just a plain old simple Sharpie Permanent Marker except the important part is it is Silver Metallic.  They usually have them at Wal-Mart.  Might want to wait for a couple of more members to give input but that is what I have used so far this season.

I believe the one you're talking about is called a "painter", they're made by sharpie but use oil based paint instead of ink. The paint lasts much longer than any regular sharpie. I got mine in Michael's craft store. Don't know if you have a Michaels where you are but most craft stores have them.

Thanks !!!  after playing "pick-up-stix" with a bunch of cuttings I cant say enough good things about this pen.

It's a white out pen I use it to mark all of my cuttings.

They're paint markers...Available at most craft stores, Elmer's brand "Painters" are available at Walmart for less than $2.00 each. I use the Fine Point, Opaque, White.

Yep, acrylic paint markers found at Michael's, Hobby Lobby and such. Work great on pots, too, which is nice early on when dedicating metal tags to every new cutting would be expensive.

Has anyone tried the paint pens sold for car dealers and mechanics? My dad's a mechanic and I was thinking of using the same pens, "Industrial grade pump action paint marker". They are sold at NAPA. Anyone with experience?

What would nail polish do to a cutting, I wonder?

I use white Tire markers on plants in 5-gallon and 7-gallon pots for variety identification.
I use Sharpe for cuttings ID.
My first purchase of white marker by Elmer called "Painters" disappointed me because the liquid coming out does not look white enough but watery even after shaking and pressing. It could be batch related I guess since others are using it happily.

Frank. Thank you!    I just ordered one.  I love that it comes in a fine tip. That's what's what I need.

oooh, they have white... i ordered too. thanks Frank ;)

I use the Sharpie Silver Mettalic as previously recommended. I use it for everything outside I label. That marker does not sun bleach at all. In the past before using this marker, I had several fig tags that faded that I had to try to figure out what they were, and they were written in black permanent marker that faded in the sun. But never with this silver marker. I double label all my figs and citrus now, I make one nice label with a P-touch label, and make a second label with the silver Sharpie that I shove all the way down in the dirt just incase the other label gets misplaced somehow. And there were several times I was thankful for it! I have stuff labeled for atleast 4 years in the sun, and the Silver Sharpie is still there with no sun fade,

When I start cuttings, I put initials on my cuttings with the Silver Mettalic Sharpie too and never had a problem. Also a hint, I use a notebook and write a key for the initials with its name and source and/or number just incase I forget what the initials stand for I can always go back and look it up,

i'm going to get couple of pens in psychedelic colors and paint nice drawings on the trunks.. "laugh-in" style.

Here is the one I use. It works great!

for how long are the markers visible on the trunks? The first year? Two? When do you switch over to tags?

Ugh! I bought the pens Frank mentioned and tried them on my apple scion. They worked for about 5 minutes then wouldn't write anymore. I thought I had cleaned the fuzz off the scion well enough but now it's not working no matter what I do. Anyone know how to clean the tip or have any other pointers?

I bought the silver Sharpie markers, excellent, they never fail, they come in different thickness, i chose fine , writes awesome. it's always visible even when the cutting is wet. The white kept drying on me, i hated it. I bought the silver ones from Office Depot.

Ugh. The silver markers by Sakura wipe off the fig cuttings. I will have to figure out something else. I'll try the Sharpie that Scott suggested next time, but for now I am making supplemental labels as well.

I have used a lot of different ones and this is the best I have found for me. Fine point and silver and gold both look good
if you want something other than white.

So, they don't rub off for you? I wonder why mine are. I cleaned the area before I wrote on it as well. I bought three in different widths.

Mine do not. Make sure your cuttings are dry before applying.

Buy the SHARPIE permanent Silver.
they don't rub off. I use them for my cuttings, and during the rooting process I end up washing the cuttings again and again to get rid of some fungus or anything that doesn't look it belongs there... the writing stays on.

I've used Sakura Pen Touch Paint Markers (Silver) and have never had any problems. Make sure the wood is real dry and when you write the name of the Fig, let it dry for 10 Minutes!
