What is your best Black Fig that Tastes Good and Grows Fast...???

Ronde de Bordeaux is what I have been reading as a good variety, anymore to look for...??? This would help me adjust my wish list and fig hunt.

Seems like Col de Dame Noir would do well for you in Fresno and it is a fast grower.
RDB is very fast grower and a great choice ,tends to be small to medium size with a big taste and early.

Malta Black does really well here and it is hot and humid and lots of rain last year and it did really well. It also taste really good.

Hmm perhaps considering just the dark side ???

aaah,  Martin, my best friend, yeah, been thinkin about the awesome dark colors. Been pickin up a few cuttings and I thought about the time frame. Don't want to wait many years for some figs....I know, I don't have to much patience.....Anyway, shoot me some varieties to shoot for.

Angelo's dark. I can help you with that one if you want it?
Vito

Thanks Vito, Would be Glad to have it. Will PM you.

Armando,

Be aware that those Italian Stallion cuttings are some serious cuttings...mine rooted with 2 inch roots all around in 4 DAYS!!!  All of the cuttings were super vigorous.  I cupped it and in a week it was in a 1 gallon pot because it ate up all the space in the cup.  Can't wait to try it.

Thanks again Vito, I'll have Antonio's Black for you soon!

Here's a pic of one of the cuttings.  Those roots were longer than they look.photo.JPG

Perfect Topic for Martin and ?????   OK, best tasting fig for me was the Col de Dame Blanc I tasted at the Fig Fiesta this September..  Next Topic: Best Green Fig...LOL

Sal's g. Ok I got RdB to planted both sals and rdb at the same time. Rdb grew more bush like and fast salsg grew more tree like and fast. But weather but out of all my figs this past year sals was the top in taste even for a first year tree. It riped 12 figs and was four foot tall at the end of the fall. But the taste out did all my other figs light and dark, older and younger. This first year sals went right on my number one list its first seson even with crappy weather.

Taste was kinda peachy but not very strong that seemed to fade to berry undertones. A must. I I'm adding a few more to the yard come spring.

Will Update my Wish List....did a search on Sals g.....Wow, Dave you are the man....Thanks !!!!!

Armando,
I believe that Sal's G = Sal's EL
to make your search easier.

Armando:You are in Ca,with nice warm dry climate.
I figure you want a cultivar that produces tasty early black fruits, continuously from June to December,in your climate, which mean Breba and main one after another.
The only one that I know will do that in your climate and grow fast is Tacoma Violet.

Black Mission grows fast and produces tasty fruits in California correct?  I am not sure on this one but I thought I would ask just in case it is.

Yes, the Black Mission in my neighborhood is a superb fig. I am not sure how many different strains are out there though since I have had some that are not as nice, smaller by size and not as plentiful.

Thanks Herman, will put Tacoma Violet on my list. As a Fig Lover we are blessed with a lot of heat for fruit. But it can be miserable for the body. On the Mission, that is my true Love, my dad had one in our backyard for a few years.

Alright your on personal ignore list
but one last thing
yes mission will grow as fast as Ronde in a container this i experienced just find a good tasting strain.
Our was from Monrovia and despite FMV it grew excellent and produced excellent but after a few years taste was still not up to par on personal palate.

Sals El was better in taste excellent producer in our climate but kept falling down list in personal taste department and after 10 years was burned.

UC Davis - Black Madeira is our winner here even in my climate, grown in large container with fairy dust its Number Uno and i dont see anything beating it least not yet.

Still have others im sorting out over next few seasons with a possible few sleepers in the mix.

Now your on ignore.   ; )

I was very surprised by my young Black Greek fig and expect it to get better with age.
I think Rhonde de Bordeaux and Col de Dame Noir were just fantastic for me this year and my Vista was good as well.
A lot of my black figs suffered as the weather was too wet and dark this year. Ex. my 3 large Negronne (VdB) trees produced a lot of figs but did not ripen them very well.

there are lot of good figs... but the great ones are rare. just ask martin how many of his dark figs met 50 gal drum of death.
