I bought a small green ischia from Petals from the Past last spring and got a few delicious figs to ripen. From reading the forum posts it seems like JH Adriatic, Green Greek, Battaglia green, Verte, Paradiso and a few others are the top tier figs in this category and I would like to get the very best for a North Carolina climate. What do you recommend?

Vasilika Sika,Izbat an Naj and Hollier.

I had never heard of that Izbat an Naj but I looked up some posts about it and it looks amazing! Is it very late ripening for you usually? What is its cold hardiness like? Ideally I would like to grow varieties that do not need winter protection in my climate. Thanks for the information.

I'm in Ohio,zone 6b,is doing well for me,in ground(protected in winter),or in a 25 gal pot,a very sweet fig.

Is there a good source for that Izbat you can recommend? I am very interested by the " pineapple banana" description.

Andreas, those figs look exactly like what my mind was picturing except maybe more so. I am going to have to start stalking ebay.

I see that you are in Greece. Have you shipped them without issue to the U.S. before? I need to research some local laws.

It is absolutely Identical to Vasilika Syka,I have from Greek Gardener in Mount Laurel New Jersey.
It does need a totally sunny spot in order to ripe all fruits here in NJ, otherwise a very cold hardy fig cultivar,that spent last harsh Winter,(2014)in ground ,without protection.
Otherwise to answer the topic question,:
The best cultivar here,when we consider,the taste flavor and ability to ripe fruits in difficult climate,
Adriatic JH shines, every time!

i have Vasilika Syka as well as peloponnisiaka aspra here in greece and it is not the same fig
but if you have one you are very lucky. i hope you enjoy it.

they just went up with vasilika mavra and skoura vavatsika

Even when north-central Ohio weather doesn't let Green Ischia ripen properly, I still get good, sweet figs from her.

You are free to have your own opinion, and I am free to have mine.
I grow similar figs side to side in order to eliminate multiple names ,that makes the new gardeners so confused.
And all my trees are in ground in the open, naturally grown without artificial fertilizer.

yours is a small fig with long neck my fig is larger and rounder with short neck.
so it is safe to say you do not have peloponisiaka aspra sika or i do not have vasilika sika misnamed as peloponisiaka aspra sika.
i hope this cleared things up for you.

@mussilid yes I do like my green ischia very much. Mine is still very young and I would like to have a couple of similar varieties to compare and enjoy. I will definitely grow JH Adriatic next year and I think I will have to look into these Greek figs as well.

Adriatic JH one tree is not enough absolutely delicious! 

   

I agree w Dave. I have 4 Adriatic JH babies right now. Someone should mention Col de Dame Blanc as well here. It meets the criteria you mention, and is an outstanding fig.

I put in a vote for Panache. My climate isn't similar to North Caroline, but the tree does very well here in the desert. It is the most vigorous and productive tree I have, either light or dark and the figs are top notch. I have a couple JH Adriatic and a couple strawberry verte (green Ischia) in pots and they are also very good figs, probably on a par with Panache for flavor. They can't come close to matching in vigor or production though. Plus the little striped hot air balloon figs look cool.

You're in Raeford, that's only 3hrs or less East of me in Chrlotte. Don't waste your time with Panachee. It splits and sours here. I got 3 giant Panachees and may get one or 2 good one worth eating every year.

and Battaligia Green are my favorites and do quite well in NC.
Some say Strawberry is the same as Verte, it is not. Strawberry came from Lousianna and is an heirloom and wonderful tasting fig! Put these figs in an all day sunny spot and you will be dancing every day!

Snaglpus, I think our climates are probably the most similar so I will probably start with your recommendations. I think you have more Green fig with red interior varieties than I have in my entire collection! I think my green ischia and two or three more varieties will do it for me..... for now. Thanks for your advice.

Dave, I just ordered some JH Adriatic. It seems that nobody has anything bad to say about that variety. It looks similar to my green ischia except better. Nice pics!
