what is your favorite fig to eat?

i was talking to my good buddy james robin tonite and i asked him this question.  without hesitation he said "o-lee-a!" (this is cajunspeak for hollier).

fortunately, i have one of his holliers (actually 4 now).  i am looking forward to getting figs from most of my trees this year, though they are young.  i've got a long growing season, and they're packing on the vegetative growth now.

so what is your favorite fig, and why?

Black Madeira, best dark and White Greek, best white.

heh. anyone know where i can by a white greek :).?

Encanto Farms this Fall.

Green Ischia. Sweet, sticky, very rich fig flavor.

of the figs i got last year (4 types), the best by far was a green ischia. unfortunately, it's one of the few figs i have that's just not taking off this year.  i don't know what it is.  i rooted two cuttings from it, and i have a second one in the ground, my dad has the other farther south (his is exploding with growth).

i have to agree green ischia is a fantastic tasting and highly underrated fig.

jon, i am so glad you are around that stupid quaranteen thing, which made buying from you prohibitively expensive.  i look forwared to this fall :).

Violette de Bordeaux, when properly ripe, and climate colaborates.

Unfortunately I have no luck pinning down what I like best. Strangely every year seems to be a different variant. However I have to add that Hollier, VdB, Vicenzo, Elana, Marseillies VS, Longue D'Aout have at least been impressive once. I hope this summer will be hot and I have a chance to sample the figs real taste.

Right about now any fig would be my favorite.

Jon,
I would like to reserve one of those White Greeks for the Fall. Thank you.

ahaa Rafed, not only you need a bigger place but also a move to fig paradise. I had White Greek twice and they both kaput. Hopefully 3rd time lucky.

Paul,
Maybe the third time will be a charm. Good luck.

I sure hope it is Rafed. White Greek, Adrina & It 258 have been persistent challenges.

i am surely gonna give white greek a shot here in florida.

Paul,

My biggest disappointment was the 143-36.
Cuttings came in strong and healthy, They took root and potted them in cups and leafed out but then kaput!
My heartbreaker was the Panache.
This is the second year in the row the cuttings started out well and then died on me.
I ordered a potted one and hopefully I get it and call it the day.

My favorites:

the Bayernfeige Violetta. It did great here in the SW:

Los Lunas Fig:

Socorro Black Fig (tasted like raspberry jam):

Capelas was great also:

Kadota was really good also:

I hope my Black Madiera gives this year.

I haven't tasted that many varieties yet.

So far I've had some store bought Mission and Kadota figs,
some unknown figs that people grew in their yards in New Jersey and the Bronx,
and figs from a Hardy Chicago that I grow.
Of these Hardy Chicago tastes the best.
When its fully ripe it has a rich flavor that lingers in my mouth after I eat it.

Joe

Verte
Paradiso "Bronze"
Colsanti Dark/ "Italian Fig"
Hardy Chicago
VDB
Sucrette
Latarulla

In no particular order, but verte and the bronze paradiso are bloody delicious and Colsanti and VDB are hard to beat.  I don't have fruiting size of sucrette, but I have tasted it.
Nas

Last year I tasted Sal, Hardy Chicago, Natalina and Celeste and they all look almost the same and tasted the same (good). I tasted them on different days so either I could not compare properly or I can't say anything bad about a ripe fig. Probably as more tree start bearing fruit, I will find out the ones that I like the most.

Loslunas -- how's the taste of loslunas fig? Is it hardy? Looks like a productive variant. I think my Socorro is green. May have a chance to sample some figs. The other NM fig I have is the 11600 and its giving me 2 breba figs. Hope the dog don't mess it up as it did to my Atreano OR yesterday morning when it decided to take a short cut thru the fig patch to chase after a squirrel -- broke the only branch that was laden with good size breba.

Paul,
You and I both know your dog doesn't like me.
Next time show him a picture of me and he'll behave. LOL

Good morning Rafed. Golly you remember. May be 2 lbs of gator meat will make a difference. A lb for the dog & a lb for me. LOL.If you are in no hurry, You are most welcome to 143-36 when you are here.

Jose that Socorro black looks delicious one more for the wishlist lol. My favorite last season was the Bronze Paradiso and its not just because it was the only one that had ripe figs it has a unique flavour just love it.

Paul,
I do have one of the 143-36 still going.
Didn't mean to make it sound like a 100% failure
But thank you very much.

Still holding on to a couple and re-bagged them. We will see.

There's a "Cajun restaurant" here in Detroit. That's where I had the Alligator Voodoo. It is good
