Nice thread Danny. About 4 years ago I bought a fig tree at Lowes. A Hardy Chicago. I had never had a fresh fig before but I liked the leaves on it. Then last year I finally had my first fig and was amazed. I immefiately went to lowes to buy more, they had none. So I went online and did a search and found this forum. Bought cuttings from people, ordered cutting from UCD and started the rooting process. I had over 200 cuttings. Some I got to root, some just molded. The ones that rooted eventually died except for 1 cutting I took of of my tree that was a gift for someone else.
After losing so many cuttings and nuturing that tree all winter long I still thought it was more important for my friend to have that tree than to fill my belly with figs. At the time I also thought I had lost my tree to the severe winter. When I gave her that tree it had 4 figs on it. Both her and her daughter had never had a fig either, now they have and the tree is in the ground at her place doing great. I've learned what doesnt work for rooting cuttings and am trying again. If I fail again this year I will just buy tree but I will have more figs!!!! :)..
Thank you to everyone here that so generously shares their knowlege and cuttings. I've really learned a lot. Oh and my tree eneded up throwing off several shoots and coming back to life. I've already taken the cuttings I could this year and sent them to someone who had it on his wish list.
This winter I will protect my tree and I will eat figs next year!!!!
