I am a newbie and I need help.
Few years ago I moved to a house which has a fig tree who makes figs but they do not ripe and remain hard.  I looked at the tree right now and has lots of fruits  and just a few leaves. The fruits are on the old wood (breba??) The tree doesn't make any other figs later on. Somebody told me to water it deep every 2 weeks. I did this with no success. What kind of fig tree is it, edible or not? Can somebody help?

There are around a 1000 variety of figs. We can never guess what variety.
Where do you live?
what color is the fruit?
I'm guessing that you don't live where temperatures drop too low in winter, since you said you have brebas.

Maybe a seedling tree which is functionally male ("caprifig") and thus not edible.

I guess I did not put the question right. I am not interested to find out the variety the fig I have. I am interested to find out if this is an edible type and what could be wrong with it. I read that there is a male type( caprifig), but I guess that one doesn't  make fruits or it does?
I live in California -bay area.
The fig tree has figs but not many leave. The figs are green and different sizes -from small to big. I attached pics of the figs.
I am not sure if they are breba or something else. I just notice that they are on the last year wood.
What should I do ? Cut it and plant another one?

Whta will be more definitive is a picture of the fruit when ripe/mature. Yes, caprifigs have fruit - they just aren't edible (with a couple of exceptions).

They never ripe .They remain hard and do not fall down until the end of the year.
I guess they are not edible.Probably I have to cut the tree -too bad because is a big tree- and plant a edible one.

Instead of cutting the tree down have you considered grafting branches from different fig varieties? This way, you can use the ''strength'' and maturity of the tree to speed the growth of the grafted branches.  

It is a good idea. Probably I should try it but I never did a graft on any tree. The brunches are thick. Do you think can be done? What would you recommend ? Any website where I can learn to graft ? Should I trim the tree down before grafting?
