What should I do?

2 of my trees are wilting one is a Hardy Chicago and the other is unknown.. They are both in sun all day long.  I usually water in the morning before I go to work.  The soil on one feels moist and the other feels dry.  They are 2 different types of fig.  Help!

Another question. There is a fig growing wildly outside a fence of someone's home.  It looks like they have done nothing to it.  Should I knock on the door and ask for a piece or should bring my clippers, clip and run?  I have a whole scenario planned out in my head for the clip and run..

Are they in pots?  If so the one that gets dry you could pot it in to a bigger pot.  If in the ground a bit of shade on the soil might help.  You could also buy a water timer so the dry one gets another watering while you are away......lots of options.

1. mulch it with plastic-figs will be better too..
2.clip,n run

Smaritza,

My usual line......photos would help get a better idea of your issue.  Also, I would ask first if the house/area looks safe.  If not, let your conscience be your guide.  : )

Hi Smaritza. Are both plants actively growing? I've noticed some of mine drink a lot!
Is the soil the same for both plants? Could be one has really fast-draining mix.
Is the pot size similar? Smaller pots dry up faster.
Sounds like the 'wet' pot is overwatered and the 'dry' pot is too small.
The top can feel dry even though the soil is moist just 1/2" down.
You could try mulching to regulate the moisture.

I would knock on that person's door with a rooted cutting in hand.
That way you'll get the story and background on the mother tree.

clip and run!!! It's more exciting that way.

Knock. Try to get the story behind the tree. May make it all the more treasured!

I will try to post pics tomorrow of the trees.. I'll also let you know if knock or clip.

If you want the thrill clip-n-run and then go back and knock to get story and a few cuttings if they share. Best of both worlds.

clip it first and put a few in your car in case he says no when you knock.

Smaritza,
If the Hardy chicago was purchased, and not repotted, it may be root bound. The other plant may just need more water.

I always politely introduce myself to the owners. They have all been friendly, If not a little wary of me asking about their fig trees : )   But after polite conversation I'm usually invited back for figs and cuttings or even rooted suckers. One of the important questions other than the fig name and place of origin is the time that the figs start to ripen (so you can come back for that taste). Good Luck.

Smaritza,

Forgot to ask.....how old/young are the trees?  What size pot?  What type soil?

Ask first.
If they say "no" then go back on a moonless night all dressed in black with a really cool mask and cape and clip away to your heart's content. Be sure to leave a card thanking them for the cuttings and make sure it's signed by your new alter ego. I use . . . OOOPS --- I almost gave away my secret identity.

As for your trees -- Are they in pots? Are the pots getting too hot? --- need more info.

If the tree is growing outside of the property line -  into the neighbors yard, over the sidewalk or street, you can legally clip it.

If the tree is totally in their yard ask.

Of course I would ask even if it hanging over the sidewalk - I would be p.o.'d if some one came onto my property and clipped my tree with out asking.

Both of my trees are in pots. The HC was repotted last summer Ina five gallon. So I may have to up pot again. I forgot what kind of mix I used. The unknown was gifted to me and is a 5 gallon container and should've been perfect. It had everything it needed. So I probably messed up somewhere.

Jo-Ann I'd have to agree with you about being po'd, but this tree is just hanging out all over the sidewalk and takes up part of it. So next time in that neighborhood, I will ask about the tree. The clip and run was just my mischievous alter ego trying to emerge.

if it's on the sidewalk then it is fair game. Your helping the city by clipping back the tree before they send someone out to do it See your saving the city $$$.

Just ask Rafed he just might don on his ninja suit .

Martin,
He's busy hunting spiders.
