what sign do you look for to tell if cutting has finally made it?

i look for new bud opening and new leaves coming out. if the cutting has moved to 1 gal and it's putting out new leaves, i would say it's made it and will be fine from that point on.

Dominick's Figs and Maltese Beauty made it :)

I agree.  I don't know if I have ever had one go totally south after it has been moved to a 1 gallon pot and is putting out new leaves. I have had other issues like nutrient/fertilizer deficiencies but that's different.

Agree with others,  If it's okay after a week in a 1 gal, then it's fine.  This year, I'm using 32oz deli cups right after rooting, so they get to spend a lot more time in the cup.  So now I can kind of tell if they are going to make it long before i go to a 1 or 2 gal pot.

does anybody know what Dominique's fig look like? inside/out?
I contacted Coop and he is willing to send me  cuttings, I just want to be part of the community that carries this line;)

from my first batch of footings one one wilted a bit, then I realized it had been neglected and under watered, so I watered it and followed up with it . now it's catching up with the rest of 14 batch. soon I'll have 25 batch out  in the air, potted and all...

What leads to losses from cup to gallon?  Differences in environment?  Media?  Rough handling?  Evil spirits?

I'm almost certain it's the Evil Spirits.

Most probably, it's stress from many factors.  Change is soil and water demand (try not to disturb the roots when up potting), humidity change (from indoors to outdoors?), light change (grow light vs sun),  Temp Change, Wind stress.. etc.  They can all add up and stress out the plant if too much changes at once.

Last year, all my losses were going from 10 oz cups to 2 gal pots.  I don't expect to have as much trouble this year... knock on wood..

Agreed on the gallonish container, but also with same soil I use on big trees and able to freely water however I wish from the top with no fear of drowning delicate young roots. But( knock-on-wood), I never had much trouble moving from cups to pots in the past.

i'm sure coop can send you a pix for the Dominick's Fig. one that i've seen looks very much like a Celeste. but with this tree, it's not so much the fig, it's the thought of great man who shared his fig with coop and others.

A fig has to be 100% Italian if it ever hopes to become a made fig...

might have spoken too soon. tip of Maltese Beauty is rotting. i cut off the cuttings about an inch right above the top node and let it dry out in the room. will have to monitor carefully from here on out. i might have to do fig shuffle for this one. don't want to lose it. i can take the top node off and cut it further down if the rot spread down the cutting.

Me,, I call it successfull when it survives the upotting to 1 gallon trade and is still doing good a month later,,,    ;o)

Full size leaves, and roots poking out of the pot. I've also noticed that the potting soil dries quicker, signaling a healthy drinker.

it's drying up quickly, and has more roots poking out. but i also noticed top of cutting rotting. urgh. i chopped that off so i'll make sure it stays dry and no further issues.

When is the time to go from a cup to a one gallon?

Pete, I can imagine the stress right now, that's a valuable variety. I hope the downward spiral stops, and if it doesn't, I hope you have at least one more cutting of Maltese.

not really stressed. things happen with cuttings. i do have another cutting that's still thinking about rooting. still good and still alive, but not doing much of anything. i'll fertilize that one and see what happens. the one that's been doing well should bounce back.

I skip cup step all together, root in Zip-lock and throw it in a gallon pot and fuggetaboutit

That it eventually fruits...

What Gorgi said in above post that is when i used to root scionwood.
Also when they did decide to fruit that they were of the dark type .

Hi,
For me it is when they are 1 yo - seriously .

Second half of 2012, I made 7 cuttings in august of my Dalmatie - those suckers and branches were misplaced.
5 were together in the ground - and made new leaves - I though YES - done - How easy ! .
2 were in a 80Liters buried trashcan - the same , new leaves.
Came The 2013's spring - a cold spring- I lost the five and could save - with hard work - the two from the trashcan.
They are now 1.50 meter in height and I consider them safe .
I'm still sick to have lost the 5 - every single one had made two leaves and was fine until the winter - I still can't accept what happened to them!
For me it is the cold spring that got them short on resources - and perhaps the fact that they were in a shady position .
