What the ...

ok.. this little guy got confused :(
What do I do? Plant it upside down? Cut off the roots and hope they will come out on the correct side? Bury it completely?
Any suggestions?

Thanks!

What about planting it horizontally? Or if it is too long, oblique so the roots are in-ground.

Yeah, that's one of the solutions. Can I cut it in half and plant the top part with roots only? That way I can use a smaller container.

leave it be, and it will air prune itself.

So, you say to plant it with roots outside, vertically?

looking at the pix, you don't have node above it to cut and make another cutting. you can try planting horizontally, or plant it vertically and let that root air prune itself.

There are lots of ways to deal with it... I use the same thing Pete (bullet08) said.  Just ignore those little roots on the top.  When it has roots lower down, just plant it as if those roots on the top weren't there.  Ignore them  (so let the top be in the air just like you would if those weren't there).  The above ground roots will wither and it'll (most likely) make top growth anyway.

<<edit - it's not too uncommon to see this.  In fact, if you put a black plastic bag over the top of a living tree through the dormant season, you may see a whole web of roots hanging from the branches when you take the bag off later.  I've seen that happen.  If you keep a branch in darkness, it'll try to make roots, and will succeed if it has right moisture and is in an acceptable temperature range). >>

Thanks! Now I hope that shorty I will see the roots appear on the other end!

Well, from the photo, it kinda looks like you've got root initials already forming lower down.  Just have some patience.  Good luck.

Mike

Sorry, I did't post a photo of the entire cutting. What you see is 1/2 of it. The other end has one more node but it looks like the one without roots on the pic. I'll just wait for some time and see what happens.

Thank you for all your suggestions! Here is an update. The cutting is doing really well and has a lot of roots at the proper bottom and leaves at the proper top :)
As you can see, it is in a 1 gal pot already.
