I posted earlier asking what type of figs I have, I have a huge tree, but I am interested In taking them to the farmers market to sell. I eat them right off the tree but there is way to many on my huge tree for just me. How much would you charge for lets say a quart bag or a gallon bag?
Search craigslist for "Figs" in your area to see if anyone else is selling them. I see them go for about $5-$7 per pound.
I would check the price at places around you that sell figs, and gauge by that. Probably bad business to undercut the competition by a lot, but 10% lower might get you lots of quick sales.
supply and demand along with what you honestly feel that fig is worth. i have seen them gong as high as something like $1.50 a fig. that was unripened Brown Turkey in supermarket.
Thanks... I have tried to do my research but can't find any local prices... I live in Alabama though.
I know a place out West of Atlanta, Ga. that has eight huge trees. The lady charges $7 per gal and you pick them.
Going price here in NE Texas at the Farmers Market is $5.00 per LB. I sold out (26 lbs) week before last and my competitors couldn't sell theirs because all they had were gallon size portions. People were buying 5-6 individual LB bags but wouldn't buy a gallon at $20.00. The gallon was 5-5 1/2 lbs.Good Luck
Thanks!
They are usually sold by the gallon here. I bought several gallons last year for $3-$5 a gallon but I live in a really small town; that might make a difference.
@Jules - Wow! that is basically free! anywhere around here it is $7.00 and up for pick your own, if you can find anybody to sell them.
Danny...I read your little story, and had to really laugh. Instead of buying the gallon, they spent more buying the bags. I'll bet they thought they got a bargain, too. And...they vote!Frank
I think ill go with 4 or 5 dollars for a bag. It wont be exactly a pound because I have no way to measure that out... instead itll be over. I have one I could go to this evening but I don't know if im going to be able to pick them before this evening. hubby works and has the ladder :( oh well guess Ill just go with the flow. thanks for all the advise everyone!!
The only guy selling them at our local farmer's market had them for $4.99 a pint. Looked like they were picked 5 days earlier. Even I didn't want to take that chance eating them.
eww... ha. Mine would be picked right before I take them pretty much. no one wants rotting figs :P
yupe. i pick 'em right off my tree and goes right into my mouth :)
