What triggers the halt of ripening?

I'm aware that the shift to shorter daylight periods triggers, and cooler temps re-enforces the shift to dormancy. Does this also stop ripening?

I'm hoping that perhaps I could extend my ripening period by erecting some temporary individual greenhouses around my first and second year plants to keep the daytime temperatures up around80 to 90° as the actual daytime highs begin to dip down into the 70's and 80's.

I'm not so concerned about quality as I am being able to identify several plants that have been "confused" in the planting process when we lost the tags.

This was unusual cold weather for September.
All my old fig trees slowed down to a halt when it come to ripening, starting about 5fth of September.
This is not normal, but abnormal to have such cold night,in the 40 and 50th.

I have the same challenges like Herman is experiencing with the weather this year. Just poor fig weather.

Yes, WORST fig weather in my 11 years here (NW AR).
My experience is once there is a succession of nights in the 40's, we're done.
I look forward to Sandsquid's results: I have thought of the same thing but am investigating a hoop house instead!

My older tree's went thru a few nights in the 40s  3 consecutive nights to be exact, temos hit 45 then 46 then 46 again, they are in  in large containers . So i thought no more figs , then last week and this week temps hit 80 most days and now i'm having more Sals figs to eat and there sweet as sugar, my unknown has about 10 large figs that should be about 3 ounces each or more ripening and if weather permits more will ripen from this tree in October but we should get our first frost in that month. So funny weather this year for 1 week but tree's did well . Hardy chicago basically slowed down and only had just a few from it since cold weather.

Personally I can atest that I only harvested three times this year.
First time 2 pounds, second seven pounds and third time another 6 pounds.
And from 10th of September ,I had only a reduce number of figs getting ripe, wich we consumed, also the squierels birds, and my dogs got some of them.
It just takes too long for them to get ripe,so something is getting them before us when waiting too long.
This year it looks like I will have a lot of green figs when frost come.
Best Regards

I have been picking & discarding alot of green figs - hoping this will speed up ripening. Also, some start to turn with  a light tinge of yellow & a little soft  around the eye and fall off easily.
