what variety is Dominick's fig? ;)

has anyone seen the fig yet or we are just growing them still?
I, for one, just started to root the 5 cuttings I received from James.

Don't know but here is Coop's first thread about it (he has two more threads about it): http://figs4funforum.websitetoolbox.com/post?id=6399781

Hi Aaron
Thanks Harvey, my relationship with the Dominick Fig Tree is well documented here and the posts above will explain it all. I have also sent the story to all who received the cuttings.
In a nutshell: It is a medium sized purple fig that is delicious to eat and fun to grow. Dominicks father brought it with him from Italy in the 1930's and Dominick took care of it for 60 years until I got a sucker from that mother tree. It is free of all viruses and is a healthy and hardy variety. Dominick is now gone so I can't be sure what area of Italy it is from. There are over 75 members of the forum who have received cuttings now.
Loving every second

Aaron, use the search function!! For people who do use it, threads like this are very annoying because they only add another obstacle to finding the info that is already there.

USE a Google search (& I do mean Google!).

You can substitute the key word(s) '
Dominick' for
whatever else you are looking for on this F4F/FF.

Hi hoosierbanana,
Have you found a photo of the fruit :P ? Even with the search function ?
Aaron4usa is reporting on the success of his rooting for Dominick's fig - It is ok for me ...
Aaron4usa, when your cutting has grown send us a photo ...

I am new to rooting figs, but I think my rooted cuttings of Dominick's fig that you sent me a couple of months ago do show some variageted color to the leaves that might be FMV.  Hopoefully as they grow the effects will lessen.

Searches won't reveal what variety it is.  It doesn't seem that anybody knows at this point.  Maybe we'll have some guesses this summer or next.

I have not seen a photo of the fruit, but once there is a photo it will be harder to find because there is now one more place to look : ( It may not be a big deal to most but that is how I feel.

Ya know, when I was in Italy a few years back there were 'wild' figs EVERYWHERE! On hillsides, in cracks in parking lots, sides of buildings, open fields, backyards I mean everywhere! It is a weed there. With all that genetic diversification (I'm sure most started out from seeds not cuttings) there are literally millions of possible distinct trees in Italy alone. Most of these unknowns are probably an unnamed variety because it has no name. Many may have just 'popped up' in a yard, bore great fruit and cuttings brought here when they immigrated. Not all unknown varieties can be ID'ed because they don't have a recognized name.

This will soon be a reality.  In the meantime we can certainly try to keep the known fig cultivars identified and in good hands.

*Hoosier... that's the exact reason I have asked to every one this question, I have seen the tree pictures and leaves and I have received the wonderful story of the Dominick's Fig Tree, I have kept it. But what I am hoping to find is the picture of the fruit, which I just found out is Dark and still don't know the pulp color and the ostiole look etc...
and ...no to offend you or anything, it's a free country and I can start a new thread as many times as I please. SO CAN YOU...:)
Don't worry about the precious cyber real estate space that you might take for a good reason.
Maybe you should start a Feelings4Fun Forum, then maybe someone will care about how you feel about things, LOL Peace ;)
I , for one, am here to learn as much as possible all about FIGS!

*Harvey, thanks for the thread site man.

*Coop, thank in advance for the PM earlier.

*jdsfrance, thanks for getting my point and making it more elaborate for all;)

*George, thanks for the tip, i'll keep that as a future reference.

* Sue, great point... but there's always light at the end of the dark tunnel.

*Soni, you sound like you know something we don't! LOL ;)

Whoa! Tone down the rage and don't forget the golden rule.

does it really matter what the fig looks like in this specific case? personally, i got the cutting based on the memory of dominick. if i'm looking for a specific fig with specific characteristics, this isn't it. with this cutting, it's not so much as what the fig looks like, but what a man and his father grew in this country for last 80+ yrs. i have other figs i got just for specific purpose. name, color, eye size, taste... Dominick's Fig was to carry on his memory... it's a piece of america and what those who came here brought with them.

I just want to know what it looks like inside and out. is that a crime? shish...LOL

Bingo Pete.

I am getting embarrassed by all this, this was not my intention.

Ahhh, Lovely! and , YES, that's a virus free leaf.
See Brent, isn't it better to know all this? :)
Great job Coop.
Thank you.

At least no-one got hurt right Aaron?

That is an Etna fig, it is like Sue says.  No harm done Coop, we all forget things from time to time and things happen that are out of our control. Really, what you did is beautiful.

This is a vigorous grower for me.  It does have some FMV but that doesn't bother me a bit because it will fit right in with my other figs.

Looks to be a Mt. Etna type fig, from the picture. Nothing wrong with that as they have 4 out of 4 desirable characteristics in a fig: closed eye, vigor, taste and cold hardiness.

and an amazing story on top of all that. can't go wrong with all that.

Hey Coop...was out at my parents today and the Dominick rooted cutting I gave them is the largest one in the pots out of the 9 or so varieties. Family loved the story. My copy is also doing really well! Thanks again!

Dominick shared his fig with me some years back and I lost it to a freeze.
Sadly, I did not know that he passed. Anyone know when this happened?

Thank you for the link.
