They look like Sierra figs.  I find them at my grocery store too.

Could be one of many Kadota strains.

Meghan,
The Sierra is more flat and bright yellow. I have seen it at another collectors place and it is a beautiful fig.
Fruit is very similar to Excel.

Well lets just say that it looks like the figs they are selling in the grocery store labeled Sierra figs.  I'll see if they still have any tomorrow when I'm there.

Mehgan,

Please post some if you can. And see if the tray that they come in are the type with the multiple fig names with the little square box next to the names that requires a check mark to identify which variety it is.

Sure will!

Here are some pictures of my grocery store figs.

Where are you finding those Meghan?

I picked these up at Randalls in The Woodlands

They weren't as good as the ones I picked up last time.

GRRRRR....our Randall's closed 2 weeks ago.

I've seen them at HEB too

Meghan,

They will never be as good as tree ripened to the fullest.

Hopefully next season my sierra will produce fruit so I can post it. Unless someone else has it and post it now.

BTW,
The Sierra you posted above are green. But the picture on the package closely resembles the fruit but should be a bit flatter.
Proof to stay away from store bought (fresh) figs.

I have enough fig tree's that next year I shouldn't have to buy any figs.  My tree's are all in between fig crops at the moment and we happened on those at the store.  They are okay for salads and the such, nothing like a freshly picked fig in your own yard.  Some were more amber inside, others had a hint of pink.  I'm sure if they ripened fully on the tree they would have been more red inside like on the picture.

Or fig preserves;)

Or Danny's Fig infused Vodka that he sent me a recipe for

Hmmm,

Maybe we do the fig infused vodka jello filled figs?

Vodka=figs infused=make jello out of them and stuff into figs.
Jello shots with a twist.

Ohh.  Now I can see where this is going.  The next fig gig is going to be a blast!  I'm also thinking a bourbon soaked fig cake with some of my British friends home made bourbon butter!

Thanks for the tip, Meghan!  Here in DFW, Randall's is called Tom Thumb.  I checked and they had Panache, Brown Turkey and Sierra figs.  I got one of each.

The Panache only had 1 ripe that tasted good.  1 was rotten, the rest were not near ripe.  They were dry and bitter.

The Brown Turkey was ripe and soft, but no taste.  I gave one to my 6 yo daughter and she said "Uuhh, Dad?  This tastes like nothing..."

The rest of those became 1.5 pints of Fig Jelly that we all enjoyed this morning.

Now the Sierra figs were pretty darn good.  Soft, ripe, and sweet. 1 had some mold spots, but the rest are fine. Saved those for eating fresh.

James,

The brown turkey's that I picked up were the same.  Lacked flavor.  The Panachee I picked up were actually pretty good.  They were sweet, had a light seed crunch and a hint of berry.  I'm sure they are a lot better picked fresh!  The Mission figs were pretty good.  A little dry, but they had a nice flavor and went great in a salad.  The Sierra figs are very sweet with an almost jam like center.  I think any of them would be great for baking or preserves (if you don't have your own that is) but for what they cost you can buy a fig tree!
