What was your best light fig of 2013?

We have a dark and favorite thread, I think the lighter side deserves some attention too.
Mine was Peters Honey, but not much to compare to. If Flanders ripened here while there was still some heat, it probably would have beat out PH.

What was your favorite light?

My favorite white fig this year was Panachee, I didn't have much to compare it to though, next year I predict it will be col de dama blanc.

Well I had a Col de Dame blancs which were excellent, but definitely more productive and also very good indeed was Vasilika Sika, that would be my best light fig this year.

I don't have too many light figs but I would say an unknown light fig from Calabria followed by Conadria.

In the unsuitable climatic conditions we had this year,Adriatic JH,made more edible good tasting ripe  fruits than any other white fig this year.

Hmm let me think about that question.

; )

Italian honey was my favorite this year.  Should have more to compete with it next year though.  But they were true to their name and boy was it productive.  It was growing 8 - 10 figs on each branch tip in big clusters.

Panache.

This was my only white besides Peter's Honey,
and IT WAS DELICIOUS!
Not much to compare to, but I could eat a dozen
of these ANYTIME!
Atreano, the only one I left on this young start.

My White Genoa always produces great figs. My Brevia de Galicia also was a winner.

Our favorite was Long Yellow -Atreano-Latarolla.

JH Adriatic was the very best.
Conadria from EL was surprisingly good when fully ripe.

Adriatic was the best here,Gentile was second.Ciao,
Giuseppe

My favorite light fig this year was green ischia, we found a tree growing in my neighbors yard that is 10+ years old and the figs had a wonderful flavor

Well, I'm anxious to try Adriatic JH.  (Hopefully next year).  But for me, the best light fig for this year was Battaglia Green (tree is from Sybil at Paradise Nursery).  For pics, see
http://figs4funforum.websitetoolbox.com/post/battaglia-green-6576311

It seems like a light fig that even Martin might enjoy.  Nice jammy red center.

<edit -- added emphasis (bold type) to Battaglia Green>

For my climate...

Light color figs --these figs turn yellow:

Peter's Honey   Pass out good (15)
Excel              Pass out good (15)
Kadota            Pass out good (15)
Italian Honey    Pass out good (15)
LSU Gold          Sweet (6)

I don't put green figs in a "light" category.  WHy?  Because they stay GREEN!

Green color figs:

Adriatic JH         Pass out good (15)
Adriatic RT         Pass out good (15)
Strawberry         Pass out good (15)
Battaglia Green   Pass out good (15)
Portogalio          Pass out good (15)

NOTE:  My Strawberry is not Verte dispite what some may think.  My Verte fig trees ripened later and taste like salad dressing this year. [rofl]

OK Dennis, definitions and categorizing get murky.  (Clearly they get murky)  :-).

It seemed like the union of the sets {Light Figs} and {Dark Figs} maybe ought to equal {all figs} though, just since the words light/dark at least seem to partition all.  But I had a similar dilemma when I answered this query:  I wasn't sure whether to consider EBT brebas as light or dark (light or dark?... they seem kind of in between or both).  I know... instead of thinking of light/dark, I'll just think of {figs I enjoy a lot} and {figs I don't enjoy a lot}... that'd maybe do it!

Glad to see you've got some green ones in the Pass out good (15) category.  But still I wonder what is the highest number on your scale?  :-)

Mike

Light before they ripen count ?   ; )

Mike, you made me laugh reading your post.  Yes light and dark does partition all figs.  But, I never really liked Ray's 2 category of figs....light and dark.  To me, there are more shades of categories besides light and dark.  In my area, country folks think green figs are not ripe!  Go figure!

I'm working on my website that will list figs in categories something like this:

Green
Yellow
Grey
Red
Brown
Purple
Blue
Black

I might call these colors instead of categories.  You see to me, Desert King is green, not light.  And it definately not yellow.  If anything the category should be Green or Black.  All figs start out as green and some like Desert King stay green.   Mike, I see your point.  Man this is fun!

Some forum friends have posted pictures of their Desert King and the fig is yellow!!!!  HELLOOOOO, Desert King is a green fig.  GO FIGURE!!  I think those that bought a fig labeled Desert King is really Norman's Yellow which is the exact same fig as Desert King (San Pedro type).  The only difference is it turns yellow when ripe.

EBT is a brown fig in my spectrum.  Celeste is red but my Big Al is purple.  Black Maderia is black and some Brown Turkey figs are red and some cultivars are brown.  The real fig in question is Smith!  In my spectrum of color, Smith is brown fig.

And another category that just grinds my gears is "tasty".  I don't like describing a fig's taste as "tasty".  When a person writes on the forum that their fig is "tasty", to me that says "I don't know what this fig taste like".  It might taste very good but how good is it?  Does it taste better than eggplant?  or Squash?  Because those 2 vegetables have no taste in my opinion.  To me, meat loaf is "tasty".  Pizza is "tasty".  So if I told you my fig taste like pizza you can relate to how it taste.  But if I told you my pizza was tasty like my brown turkey fig....again that would not tell you anything!  So, to me "tasty"  is just a figure of speech.  Does tasty means.."wow that's good"?  or does it me mean it just ok?  Saying "tasty" doesn't give the reader a clear picture how the fig really taste.  See my point?

Google says this is the definition of tasty and I agree but...Tasty still does not explain how a fig taste:

(of food) having a pleasant, distinct flavor.

"a tasty snack"
synonyms:delicious, palatable, luscious, mouthwatering, delectable, ambrosial, toothsome, dainty, flavorful;

Dennis and i thought i was picky.
You mention Black Madeira is black not here in our yard .

Thats why many call figs either light or dark instead of assigning a color to it types because they can look different
depending on where one grows it.

Love it when i can post a dark type in a light type thread .
Bada Bing!

Now THERE is a first for a fig taste description lol!!!

Ah Martin, somehow I just knew that you'd post in this light fig thread.  I tried to entice you into it with my post #16... I suspect you might even secretly enjoy Battaglia Green (it tastes more like a dark fig than a light fig), or at least that you'd enjoy it if you eat it without anyone seeing you eating it.   (Maybe it'd have to be a dark room, or a blindfold taste test, or something else that'd help you be colorblind about it).  :-)    But still you managed to post a black madeira in a light fig thread  :-)

Mike

I thought all 5 of these were just excellent this year.
I tried to narrow it down to 1, then to 3, but just had to list these 5 together.

Col de Dame Blanc
Battaglia Green
Longue d'Aout
Monticello Marseilles
Baskinta Purple --- isn't really a dark fig, so . . .

I have a lot of light figs -- probably not enough to balance out Martin's collection -- and it seemed the light figs handled the rain and lack of heat better then my dark figs. I even had Celeste trees with lots of split figs for the first time ever. I also have more varieties that aren't going to ripen then I expected.

Could you be more specific?  Is that a French or Italian salad dressing?  Or Hellmans?

Dennis, did you use olive oil on the Verte to ripen it?
