Mike, you made me laugh reading your post. Yes light and dark does partition all figs. But, I never really liked Ray's 2 category of figs....light and dark. To me, there are more shades of categories besides light and dark. In my area, country folks think green figs are not ripe! Go figure!
I'm working on my website that will list figs in categories something like this:
Green
Yellow
Grey
Red
Brown
Purple
Blue
Black
I might call these colors instead of categories. You see to me, Desert King is green, not light. And it definately not yellow. If anything the category should be Green or Black. All figs start out as green and some like Desert King stay green. Mike, I see your point. Man this is fun!
Some forum friends have posted pictures of their Desert King and the fig is yellow!!!! HELLOOOOO, Desert King is a green fig. GO FIGURE!! I think those that bought a fig labeled Desert King is really Norman's Yellow which is the exact same fig as Desert King (San Pedro type). The only difference is it turns yellow when ripe.
EBT is a brown fig in my spectrum. Celeste is red but my Big Al is purple. Black Maderia is black and some Brown Turkey figs are red and some cultivars are brown. The real fig in question is Smith! In my spectrum of color, Smith is brown fig.
And another category that just grinds my gears is "tasty". I don't like describing a fig's taste as "tasty". When a person writes on the forum that their fig is "tasty", to me that says "I don't know what this fig taste like". It might taste very good but how good is it? Does it taste better than eggplant? or Squash? Because those 2 vegetables have no taste in my opinion. To me, meat loaf is "tasty". Pizza is "tasty". So if I told you my fig taste like pizza you can relate to how it taste. But if I told you my pizza was tasty like my brown turkey fig....again that would not tell you anything! So, to me "tasty" is just a figure of speech. Does tasty means.."wow that's good"? or does it me mean it just ok? Saying "tasty" doesn't give the reader a clear picture how the fig really taste. See my point?
Google says this is the definition of tasty and I agree but...Tasty still does not explain how a fig taste:
(of food) having a pleasant, distinct flavor.
"a tasty snack"
