I was given this fig a couple of years ago but have no idea what variety it is.  I'm in the UK where the most common fig grown is Brown Turkey.  Is it that I wonder?  The figs I've picked have been cream/pale pink inside, but maybe they were underripe.  Any help appreciated. :-)

Welcome Andrew,you could be right.The leaf is a good match as is the fruit for English Brown Turkey although there a few varieties which are similar.Could you advise whether this fruit was formed on new growth this season or from wood 1 year or more old?

I ask as if it is on older wood it would be a Breba,most of which are a bit more elongated and lopsided here.If it's on new wood this would be a main crop fig which are usually less elongated and more uniform in shape.

Unfortunately I don't have a picture of the inside of the fruit (I ate the one above without thinking!), but it was on the lighter side of the images you posted Haroon.  It may have been a slightly underripe but it tasted sweet enough.  This fruit was a main crop.  The brebas fell off in May when we had a cold snap.  I'd overwintered it in the greenhouse.  Took it out late April thinking it would be fine, but then the vagaries of the English weather took effect :-(  Will know better next time!

I thought it might be main crop by the shape,congrats on getting a main crop fig on your BT,the weather hasn't been good enough for the main crop to ripen here,loosing your Brebas early on probably helped the tree ripen the main crop despite the rubbish summer.

When to pick is a difficult thing to get right?i hope your tree give you many more opportunities to guess correctly.Picked a little early the figs should still be edible,sweet but without much else going on.

In any case,BT is a reliable variety to have in our climate so it's a good one to have.I see you have Violette de Bordeaux coming soon,also a good choice,I should be adding that one this winter-this is how it starts lol

Andrew, here's the photos of my brown turkey taken today. Looking at your photo again, my fig looks to have been picked riper, showing the cracks in the skin.

Thanks John and Haroon.  The inside of mine was definitely much paler than in your photo John so I guess not completely ripe.  I think I'm having difficulty with the ripening here.  I think it's mainly the climate: the summer's been wet and at times quite cool, but worst of all, windy.  Ironic as Essex is usually noted for its exceptionally dry summers. Last year I put the fig in the greenhouse in September and still the figs seemed to take ages to ripen to the same pale-pink interior colour.  The advantage of its being in a container is that I can try different positions.  OR, I can have more fig trees and dot them about :-)  Two cuttings I took earlier in the year are now over a foot tall with embryonic figs already (see photo), so there's a start!

Yes, the weather is why my figs are pot grown and spend a lot of the year in the greenhouse so I can be sure they will ripen.
